What are selective herbicides?

Grasses on the lawn

Herbs in a garden are not always welcome: they grow at a much faster rate than our plants do, so it is very easy that, if we do nothing, they end up "drowning them" ... And they are not parasites, but as if they were. To avoid this, what is done is to eliminate them with herbicides, which may or may not be selective.

This time let's talk about selective herbicides, since they are the ones that will allow us to have a corner as we wish: with flower plants (and / or of another type), but without wild herbs.

What is a biosimilar

Selective herbicides are those that are used to eliminate a specific type of wild grass, preserving the rest of the crops on which it is applied. Depending on it, they may be specific to broadleaf weeds (dicotyledonous plants) or those with narrow leaves.

How often do they apply?

It is very important to read the label on the container and follow its instructions, since this way we will know how often to apply them and how to use them correctly. But to give you an idea, selective broadleaf herbicides are applied in spring and fall; and those with narrow leaves should be used between 2 and 3 times a month.

Why do you have to follow the directions?

There are several reasons why the instructions specified on the packaging must be read and followed. They are as follows:

A selective herbicide can become total

In large doses, the selective can kill all plants, not only those that we are not interested in having. And, conversely, a total herbicide at low doses can become selective.

Long-term use harms the environment

We can't forget that we are talking about toxic chemicals. If we use them for a long time we will damage the flora and fauna that live in the soil.

You may need a manipulator card to use it

Since November 2015 in Spain, the phytosanitary product handler card became mandatory for the purchase and application of products such as herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, etc.

There are some that are available for sale without a license, which are called Authorized for JED (Domestic Outdoor Gardening), and those will be the ones you can buy.
