How to care for a cactus

Discover how to care for a cactus

Surely you have ever wondered how to care for a cactus. Most of us buy small cacti, of which they come in pots of 5'5cm in diameter, because they are cheap, and above all very beautiful, since some even give cactus flower which is precious. Even with thorns, they have more than one of us in love.

But the care that these little ones need is not so different from that needed by adult cacti that are already planted in the ground. And there are many problems that can arise if we pamper it too much, or if, on the contrary, we let it take care of itself. To avoid problems, below we are going to teach you how to care for a cactus to keep you healthy.

What is the climate like in your habitat?

The climate that cacti have in their habitat is hot and dry

To understand how cacti are cared for in their natural habitat, you have to know what the climate is like there. For example, let's talk about the acquaintance Saguaro, the tallest cactus in the world that lives in Sonora (Mexico). Desert sand has hardly any nutrients, which means that a the plants only serve as support.

The little food that can be in the sand, the roots cannot absorb it directly, since they need an essential element: Water. And where does the water come from? From the monsoons, in this case, from the Mexican monsoon.

Monsoons are seasonal winds which are due to the displacement of the equatorial line. In summer, blowing from south to north, they come loaded with rain. In winter they are winds that come from the interior that are dry and cold.

The monsoon in North America and Mexico is defined as "wet monsoon", as it is characterized by brief but torrential rains, thus creating a high enough humidity for plants to absorb water, which they say which is one of the most nutritious in the world. This water dissolves the nutrients in the soil, making them accessible to plants, and thus, the cacti can grow.

What does a cactus need to live?

In short, cacti need: light, water, compost and a warm or warm-temperate climate. It is a very serious mistake to let these plants take care of themselves from day one. Even in the Mediterranean, where if we take into account the climate there could be many gardens with these types of plants, it is difficult to keep them healthy and beautiful if they are not given minimal care. Even adults appreciate receiving water and compost from time to time.

For this reason, when buying a cactus, like the monkey's tail or another, it is important to keep in mind that in order to grow we are going to have to be a little aware of it.

How to care for a cactus at home?

Cacti need sun and water

If we have bought one and we want to provide it with the best care, then we are going to explain everything you need to know so that your beloved plant does not lack anything:

Are cacti indoor or outdoor?

Small and large cacti need a lot, a lot of light. Since there is usually not enough for them inside the house, it is important to have them outside. But it is also important to avoid exposing them to the sun king if they had been indoors or in the shade until now, since otherwise they will burn.

Thus, what we will do is accustom them, little by little, to direct sunlight. We will start by leaving them in the sun for an hour early in the morning, and we will increase the exposure time by one hour each week. If we see that brown (dry), yellow or reddish spots appear on its stem, we will take a step back; In other words, we will reduce the time you will be exposed to the sun's rays.

Earth

We know that for a few months they have enough water, and that the sand basically only serves as a support. Ideally, in cultivation they should have as a substrate any draining material, either perlite (for sale here), clay pellets, ... with very little peat, and pay often. Now, since we are not all lucky enough to be able to live in Mexico, we can use the following mixture: black peat and perlite in equal parts.

If you want to have it in the garden, it will also be necessary that the soil is light and that it has an excellent sewer system. If not, we will make a large hole, at least 1 x 1 meter, and fill it with a mixture of universal substrate with arlite or perlite in equal parts.

What pot does a cactus need?

The most recommended type of pot is the one made of clay with holes in its base. (how are you that sell here). Mud is a material that, unlike plastic, is porous, which allows the roots a better grip. This makes it easier for the plant to root, and therefore makes its growth and development ideal.

But if we plan to increase the collection, plastic pots will also be useful. The only thing is that it will be highly recommended to buy those that are resistant to ultraviolet rays, especially if we live in an area where the degree of insolation is high, since otherwise after a few years they will be damaged and we will have to recycle them.

If we talk about the size of the container, it will depend on the cactus itself. And is that if for example we have one whose root ball (root bread) has a width of 5 centimeters, his would be to plant it in a pot with a maximum diameter of 8-9 centimeters.

However what we do not advise doing under any circumstances is planting a mini cactus in a huge pot, although we know that it will be very large, since the risk of rotting is very high. It is always better to find one that is at most about five centimeters wider and taller than the one you already have.

How to transplant cacti?

For transplant a cactus you have to wait for the plant to have roots coming out through the holes in the pot, and for spring to arrive. When the case arises, we can plant it in a larger pot or in the garden. Let's know how to do it:

  • Flower pot: the first thing we will do is fill the new pot with peat and perlite in equal parts, up to half or a little less. Then, we will remove the cactus from the 'old' pot and introduce it into the new one. And finally we finish filling and watering.
  • Garden: in the garden a planting hole should be made in a sunny area. If it is a very heavy or compact soil, we will fill the hole with a mixture of peat with perlite in equal parts; if not, we can use the same land that we have removed. Then, we extract the cactus from the pot carefully, and we will put it in the hole, and then fill it and water it.

How to get it out of the pot without hurting us?

Cactus spines can do a lot of damage, so it is advisable to wear gloves. The typical gardening ones can be useful if the plants are small and we are careful, but if not, it is better to use ones that are thick, like the ones they sell here.

And so and everything, if our plant is of a certain size we will have to wrap it with cardboardAt least (if we have a cork, we will put it on too), lay it on the ground and thus remove it from the pot. We will do this in the area where we want to plant it, since in this way it will be much easier to have the cactus where we want it.

How to water a cactus?

As to irrigation, I think it's important to say that the myth that cacti hardly need water is not entirely true. A cactus that is growing has hardly any water inside, therefore, it is very important to water it every time the substrate is dry. And an adult cactus, which has been properly cared for when young, even if it is planted in the ground, will need to continue drinking water and, once it depletes its own reserves, it will soon show signs of weakness (this is when problems such as stem rot, fungi in the upper part of the cactus,…).

Fertilizer of small and large cacti

The best time to pay is spring and summeras this is when the cacti are in full growing season. We will follow the instructions on the container so as not to run the risk of adding more fertilizer than necessary. For example: there are fertilizers that the label says that it is convenient to apply it every week.

If we live in a climate that is dry and hot in the summer, surely we should water weekly. Then we can take advantage and in the same irrigation water, add the fertilizer. Small and large cacti will appreciate it.

Cactus pests and diseases

Cacti can have several pests

First we are going to mention the pests, and they are:

  • Red spider: it is a reddish spider mite that also feeds on cactus sap. It is eliminated with acaricides. More information.
  • Mealybugs: There are many types of mealybugs, but the cottony one is the one that most often affects them. They also chop the stem of the cactus to absorb the sap. More information.
  • Snails and slugsThese mollusks feed on cacti, and they can do a lot of damage to them. They can even devour them, completely, and leave only the thorns. Hence, it is crucial to put, at least, repellants. More information.

As for diseases, the most common are:

  • Botrytis: especially after a rainy episode, it is a fungus that rots the cactus causing a gray mold to appear. More information.
  • Rot: they are fungi, such as the phytophthora, that rot the roots and / or the stem of the cactus. More information.
  • Roya: it is a fungus that causes the cactus to begin to have a kind of orange or reddish powder. More information.

It is treated with fungicide, although the watering must also be suspended and, if necessary, the substrate should be changed for another that drains the water better.

Do they need frost protection?

The cold hardiness of cacti varies depending on the species. But in general we are talking about plants that support weak frosts, down to -2ºC, of short duration (that is, after the frost has occurred, the temperature takes little time to rise above 0 degrees) and punctual.

If it is cold in your area, you may be interested in this article:

How to take care of my cactus

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Julissa.
Cacti are very sensitive to overwatering, so they need to have a very porous substrate (you can mix black peat and perlite in equal parts), and watering weekly or every 10 days depending on the weather in your area. It is important to let it dry between waterings.
And, finally, it has to be located in a place where the sun shines directly.
      A greeting.

Hello Monica, I wanted to know if your pot in a disposable glass of 11cm is okay and if the stones around it help its healthy growth, I read that if you touch it and it is hard, it is very healthy and I did it and so it is…. all right?
I also wanted to know its species, it is round, small and full of thorns ..

        1.    Monica Sanchez said

          Hi Ahinara.

You can have a cactus in a container, as long as it has holes in the base, and it is not whitish in color since in summer the roots would overheat.

If you feel it hard when you play it, that's fine indeed. But take into account the pot and water it only when the soil is dry.

With regard to its species, I could not tell you without seeing a photo. There are many cacti that, when young, are round and very thorny 🙂. Maybe it could be a Mammillaria, but without seeing it… I couldn't tell you. You can send a photo to our Facebook if you want.

          Greetings.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hey.
If it rains for 2 or 3 days in a row nothing happens, but if it is going to rain for longer it is advisable to protect them from the rain, just in case 🙂.

Hello good Morning! Sorry for my ignorance about it, but at home we have had a cactus for about 5 years and it has not grown much or at least not tall but it has widened and the doubt is these small cacti how much can they grow? because ours is not even 50 centimeters. Thank you and very good material that you put.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Richard.
There are cacti that stay small for life. Depending on the species, there are some that do not grow more than 20cm or even less.
We are glad that you like the blog. Greetings 🙂.

Thanks for taking the time to answer me, I see that then surely ours is already that size hehehe. again thanks for the information.

Hello, yesterday I bought 4 different cacti that come in a 5 or 6 cm pot, they measure between 5 to 7 cm. At what point could I change the pot? I have them inside the house; Also, when can I take it outside? I live in the south of Rio Negro; cold and dry climate,

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Ignacio.
You can change them pot and move them outside in spring, when the risk of frost is over.
      A greeting. 🙂

Good morning, thanks for all the information.
I have a question. Yesterday I bought my first cactus, I think I was over 2 cm high and 3 cm in diameter, I bought it thinking of taking it to my office where I can put it in the window to sunbathe. Is this enough in terms of sun? Or should I better leave it at home? As for the air conditioning, will it hurt?
I hope you answer, thank you very much in advance.

Yesterday I bought my first cactus, it is very small, it does not exceed 2 cm in height and 3 in diameter ****
    Errata hahahaha

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello manuela.
The more direct sunlight cacti receive, the better. Anyway, it must also be said that in very well lit rooms (with natural light) they grow well.
Air currents can harm it, so it is advisable to put it in a corner where they reach you.
Greetings, and thanks to you 🙂.

Hello. I have a cactus that this year grew like little arms
Sides. They fall off very easy if you touch them. My question is to know if they are sprouts that I can plant and how to do it. Thanks

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Paula.
It is difficult to know if they are flower buds or "arms". If you see that the days go by and they do not bloom, then it will be buds.
You can separate them from the mother plant when they are at least 1 or 2 cm tall, making a clean cut as close to the cactus as possible, and applying rooting hormones before planting it in a pot with a porous substrate (perlite, for example).
Keep it slightly damp, and you will see how in a short time it will emit roots.
      A greeting.

Hi Monica, my concern is that I have 2 tiny cacti and I have them on top of a refrigerator in my business since they said that envy makes them grow ... honestly one started to come out like little arms or little horns much longer than the leaves xq They are like round my cactus ... my fear is that they dry out ... how do I take care of them. And is the place where I have them okay?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Lily.
Cacti need to be in full sun in order to grow. They can also be had in rooms that are very well lit (by natural light).
What you say about your cacti, they are probably trying to capture more light, so I would recommend putting them in a brighter place.
Water them very little, once a week or every 10 days, so they can grow well.
      Greetings 🙂.

Hello I had a question, about two or a month and a half ago I bought three different and tiny cacti. One of them the smallest that is like a ball with white hair is drying or something like that. What I can do? Because it happens? Please help.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Beka.
I recommend you water them very little, once or twice a week and place them in an area that gives them direct sun.
It also does not hurt to treat them for fungi, with a broad spectrum liquid fungicide following the indications specified on the container.
      A greeting.

hello qtal a year how much can a cactus grow more or less in pots of height and width

        1.    Monica Sanchez said

          Hello david.
It depends on the species, but very little: about 2-3cm, assuming that the diameter of the pot is twice the diameter of its body. For example, if the cactus is about 4cm in diameter, the pot has to be about 8cm.
          A greeting.

Greetings Monica! I have a serious problem! I have a cactus that is expanding everywhere. I understood that maybe He is looking for sun, but the detail is that the mother they are coming from looks weak and as if she is rotting. What happens? What do I do?!!!!!!!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Octavia.
If it is rotting, I recommend that you cut your teeth and plant the cutting in a pot with a very porous substrate (you can use river sand alone if you want), and water it about 2 or 3 times a week.
Fungi are very difficult to eradicate, and when a plant begins to have a soft stem, it is usually because it is already affected by them.
      A greeting.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi, Pablo.
The cacti should be placed in an area where the sun hits them directly, and water them once or twice a week.
It is also advisable to fertilize them during spring and summer with fertilizers prepared for cacti.
      A greeting.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Mireia.
No, if they are thorns it is because they will grow a sapling, a small cactus 🙂
The flowers do not influence the growth of the plant.

Thank you very much and a big greeting for you.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Yulieth.
When the soil is very, very dry and compact, which looks more like a block of hard soil than anything else, it is best to put the pot in a bucket of water until the substrate softens.
      A big greeting 🙂

It has little sun, but a lot of daylight comes in and the weather is also very hot, I was spraying it once every week or two, one day I realized that its leaves were like parched, but they began to grow long and thin arms, I understand now that it must be looking for sunlight, but it has little leaves that have dried up and you can knock it down just by touching them, that's bad, I don't want it to rot and its long arms are green and beautiful, they came up from the tips of its leaves . What do you advise me
    Greetings ..

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Marilu.
If you can, place your cactus near a window where it gets plenty of light. Go turning it from time to time so that it reaches you everywhere.
With regard to the stems, if you see that it is necessary, put a tutor or something so that they do not fall.
You can stop spraying as these plants live in very dry environments 🙂.

Hi Monica, I have taken note of all your advice but I still have one doubt: they have given me a cactus to put next to the office computer because of the radiation and others. It is now about 12cm tall and comes in a 10cm diameter pot. Do I have to transplant it? I do not understand plants or land or others and I do not have at home, so I would have to buy.
    Thank you

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Onintze.
Yes, it is highly recommended to transplant it. You can transfer it to a 20cm diameter one, mixing universal growing medium with perlite in equal parts (you will find both in any nursery or garden store; a 5l bag will suffice, and even spare you).
With regard to radiation, unfortunately it is not true. Cacti do not absorb them, not all. And anyway, for it to be useful, we would have to put it right in front of the monitor, and even then the radiation would continue to reach us, because a cactus cannot cover the entire screen.
The best thing to do is to put this cactus in an area where it gets direct sunlight, and water it very little: once a week. In the event that it cannot, you can always keep it in a room where a lot of light enters, near a window for example (but you have to turn the pot from time to time so that the sun reaches all parts of the plant).
      Greetings 🙂.

    Good afternoon:

I just read, in another forum: That, when buying or receiving a small cactus, planted in a pot of about 4 cm. in diameter, it should be moved to a larger pot and not watered for a long time. I do not understand it, because these plants are with the ground completely dry. Also, being in the summer season as we are, if it does not receive water for a long time I suppose it would die.

    What do you think ?

    Thank you.

    Santiago

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Santiago.
If you buy cacti and / or succulents in spring and summer, I personally recommend transferring them to a somewhat larger pot, and then watering. If the substrate is porous and the water drains well and quickly, no problem will arise.

      Hello Ana.
You have to water until all the substrate is wet. If they are small, a glass per cactus will suffice.
By the way, I recommend transplanting them in spring so that they grow a lot during the year.

You can pay them with manure of animals, or with vermicompost. You have to pour a little, as if it were salt, on the surface of the substrate.

With these measures, half a glass will suffice - the kind used to drink water - once a week. Anyway, in spring I recommend you move it to a somewhat larger pot, 8,5cm in diameter, as this will allow it to continue growing.

Cacti must be watered 2, or even 3 times a week if the weather is very hot.
It is also important to change them from a pot to a slightly wider one, and fertilize them with mineral fertilizers (such as Nitrofosca).
With that, and being in an area where direct sunlight gives them, they will grow without problems 🙂.
      A greeting.

Hello good Morning. How nice to find someone who really knows about cacti, well, I'll tell you about it, I bought a diamond cactus more than three months ago? and a potus? .. the plant is divine but the little cactus I don't see it well, I notice it thin, fine-tuned or smaller than the day I buy it .. It makes me sad since I had another chubby boy who drowned him ..? Will it be that he is also dead? The amount of water were drops from my hand at? And it receives natural light during the day and sits on the window .. the earth is turned up because the boys were shut up 2 times from the window .. Will it have come loose? What do I do? Thanks and regards?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Tatiana.
From what you count, it seems that it lacks water.
When you water, which must be done twice a week, you have to soak the substrate well.
      A greeting.

Good day I find this cactus interesting, but I have a question I bought one 15 days ago, a small 6cm and as of today it has grown and it is 21 cm I have it in my office room I do not know if it is normal, its base It was dark green and now what it has grown into is apple green, this has some meaning or something like that. I thought it was too small. I appreciate your response. Dear Monica.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Jose.
From what you count, it seems that it lacks light.
The cacti, if possible, have to be outside, in full sun, since they do not grow well in semi-shade.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Mine.
Cacti are normally sold in small pots, in which they can no longer grow. Taking this into account, I do recommend moving it to a slightly larger pot in spring.

Hi Monica, I have some cacti in the shape of a racket that are having little children, but these are finite and very elongated, they do not have the shape of the mother. The same thing happens to me with tubular ones, they grow very thin and long. From what I've been reading, could it be lack of direct sun? The point is that I don't have where to place them so that they can get the sun. Thanks a lot

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Astrid.
From what you count, they lack light.
If you can, put them in a place where they reach more. It does not matter - although it would be ideal - that it is direct sun, but it does matter that they are in an area that is very well lit - naturally.
      A greeting.

Hello Monica, I have some cacti when I transplanted it into black soil but it is a kind of small aloe but it was thin and became transparent, what do you advise when transplanting

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello William.
If it was made transparent, it is likely that it lacks light. If that's the case, put it in an area where it gets a little more sun, and water every time the substrate is dry.
In case it is not, upload an image to tinypic or imageshack and copy the link here to see it. So we can tell you how to proceed.

How do I take care of my small cactus?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Sara.
      I tell you:
      -Location: full sun.
-Irrigation: moderate, letting the substrate dry between waterings.
-Substrate: it must have good drainage, you can use black peat mixed with perlite in equal parts.
-Absorption: during the warm months it must be paid every 15 days with Nitrofoska or similar. The amount is that of a small spoonful.
      -Transplant: every two years.

      A greeting.

Hello, my partner gave me a small cactus yesterday, approximately 5cm high, made of balls and the pot measures approx. 8 cm. The cactus is too beautiful but I have no idea how to care for it. I have been reading your answers and I have been guided. But, when watering it, shouldn't I wet the cacti? How much water should I add? Because you can't see the sand since the cactus balls cover it .. And .. When transplanting it into what pot do I do it? How often should I pay it and in what amount? ..

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Oriana.
Every time you water you have to moisten the earth, never the cactus. Another option is to put a plate under it and fill it with water, but the excess water must be removed 15 minutes after watering.
With respect to the subscriber. It is important to fertilize in spring and summer (even autumn if the weather is mild) with mineral fertilizers, either for cacti following the indications specified on the package or with Nitrofoska, pouring a small spoonful every 15 days on the surface of the earth.
The new pot has to be 2-3cm wider than the old one.
      A greeting.

THE PROBLEM IS THAT THEY ARE NOT FAT AND LOOK LIKE.

IT HAS GOOD SOIL SPECIAL FOR CACTUS AND I WATER IT 1 TIME A WEEK.
WILL IT BE THAT THE POT IS GIRL?

IN ADDITION, I TRANSPLANT THE LITTLE ARMS THAT DROPPED BUT ARE THE SAME SIZE AND I DON'T SEE THEY GROW ...

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Fernando.
From what you count, it is very possible that it lacks light.
For it to have a good development it is important that it is exposed directly to the sun.
Depending on the climate and the area where they are, it may be necessary to water them every 2 or 3 days in summer, and every 4-7 days the rest of the year.
If you haven't changed the pot since you bought it, I recommend it. So you can continue to grow 🙂.
It is also highly advisable to fertilize it during spring and summer with special fertilizers for cacti, following the manufacturer's instructions.

      Hello Caroline.
Yes, cacti and succulents have to be paid during spring and summer with a specific product for cacti following the instructions on the package, or with Nitrofoska (blue grain fertilizer) by adding a small spoonful every 15 days.
If you have not changed their pot since you bought them, it is important that you do so in spring or summer so that they can continue to grow.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Andu.
My advice is that you change it from a pot to one that is a little larger (about 2cm wider), and that you put universal growing substrate with perlite in equal parts. Put it in a place that gives it the sun (not direct) and water it twice a week.
At the moment it is small to multiply it, but next year you will surely be able to do it.

Thank you very much for answering

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Marlene.
Cacti grow best in individual pots. You can put universal culture substrate mixed with perlite in equal parts.
In spring and summer they have to be paid with mineral fertilizers, such as Blue Nitrofoska, adding a small spoonful every 15 days.
They have to be in a very bright place to grow well.

The cuttings can be planted in pots with universal growing medium mixed with perlite in equal parts.

Hello, I greet you from Panama ...
I have several small cacti a couple of years ago. But I still don't understand how to take care of them. In Panama we have places with a cold or somewhat cool climate (16 degrees), which is generally where I acquire cacti, where I live is a little warmer (30 degrees more or less). The point is that when I see them there, they are beautiful with flowers and with little children, but when I have them in my house they take time to bloom or throw little children. I water them every time I see the dry land and I put the blue granular compost on them. I don't know if you can help me with some advice on how to make them develop better in our climate. And if you know of any natural product that I can use against the squid mealybug, because if you recommend one from the market, they probably won't sell it here, they told me to use garlic and put them on with a Spray. But I don't know if that works to scare away that bug. Thank you very much in advance and your page is very good. Congratulations ?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Katherine.
      Thanks for your words 🙂.
Does the sun give them where you have them? In order to flourish they need a lot of light. For the rest, you are providing them with the best care 😉.
For the squire mealybug you can use garlic. Also paraffin oil or Neem oil (both are natural products that you can find in nurseries).
      A greeting.

    Hello?,
Around 7-10 am they get direct sun. I see that I should place them where they have more time? Another question, if a cactus looks wrinkled, is it lack of water? Sometimes it happens to me with the mini jade (or portulacari afra) that the leaves wrinkle and fall or with the succulents that change my color from pink to green. Does it have something to do with the sun or is it due to the change of weather?
Once again, thank you very much for responding. I have previously written to people blogging about cacti and had not gotten any help. I wish you a lot of success.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Katherine.
      Thanks for your words.
Yes effectively. If it wrinkles, it is because it needs water urgently 🙂.
The color change is usually due to the sun. If you give them a little more time each month, they will surely grow well.

I have a small cactus of the spider type (I don't know what species it is, I only see that it looks like a spider) about 12 cm high, it grew normal non-fleshy leaves, at the tip which seem strange to me, what type of cactus it is and the leaves what do they mean?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Antonio.
Perhaps it is a Euphorbia, which is a succulent plant (not cactus).

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello isbael.
If it is soft, like rotten, nothing can be done 🙁
If not, take it out of the pot and wrap the earthen bread with toilet paper to absorb the moisture, and leave it -without the paper- for two-three days in an area protected from direct sun.
After that time, plant it back in the pot and don't water it until two more days have passed. Thereafter, add water no more than three times a week.
If you have a plate underneath, remove the excess water 10 minutes after watering.

Hello Monica, how good your blog, I love that you answer the questions, that is not easy to find, it is excellent! 🙂 I recently started to take care of some small cacti and succulents, and I am learning by trial and error… the first mini cactus I bought had its stem rotted and was hopeless :(. However, it had a healthy little arm, which I planted in a small pot miniature, in normal soil. Almost three months have passed and it does not grow, but neither does it rot or dry out. It is next to another cactus on a balcony where it gets the sun from dawn until 10 am, and I water them once a week The other cactus seems healthy, it has grown several suckers. Will the little arm have a future? Thanks for your advice!

Regarding the cactus arm, I recommend you water it a little more, twice a week, but with homemade rooting hormones (here explains how to obtain them).
So it is very possible that you will see him growing soon.

      Hi Dafne.
For it to grow well it is very important to change it from a pot to one that is a little larger (about 2-3cm wider), and fill it with black peat (or universal growing substrate) mixed with equal parts perlite.
Water it more often: two or three times a week in summer, and a little less the rest of the year. You should also fertilize it from spring to late summer with a cactus compost.

There was dirt left in the pot, so I put the cactus in? And I filled it in with the earth and the pebbles that had fallen on my desk.

      Hi Mora.
Yes do not worry. Nothing is going to happen to him; What's more, in spring it is highly recommended to change the pot, to one that is a little older so that it can continue to grow.
Regarding irrigation, it must be watered twice a week in summer and every 7-10 days the rest of the year. In the article you have more information.

But now I live alone and a year ago I switched to my first pot cactus (out of 4 that I have) and I haven't seen it grow, I feel like it's chubbier but not much. I went to the store where I bought it and they told me it could take up to a year but I don't really see much progress. I water them not very often since I live in France and it is not very hot. I never give them compost but the soil in which I put it is well a special one for cactus that I bought! What do you think about its growth?

And what kind of compost can I use exactly? Aki the weather is early hot at night cold and sometimes rain so I don't know exactly how often to water it, I keep it in my patio in the sun

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Karen.
You can change it pot in spring, when the minimum temperature is at least 15ºC.
With respect to the subscriber, it must be paid in spring and summer, with a fertilizer for cactus following the indications specified on the package.
To know how often to water, I recommend you check the humidity of the soil. If it is in a small pot it is very simple, because you only have to weigh it once it is watered, and again after a few days. Since wet soil weighs more than dry soil, this difference in weight can serve as a guide.

      Hi Roxana.
Cacti need direct sunlight. They cannot live in semi-shade, much less in shade.
If you have them outdoors, put them in an area with a lot of light and gradually expose them to direct sun.
In the event that you have them indoors, place them in a very bright room.

By the way, it is very important to change them pot in spring so that they can continue to grow.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Angela.
As they are cuttings, I recommend keeping them in semi-shade, where they are not directly exposed to the sun.
The soil must be porous, such as river sand, pumice, akadama, or vermiculite. This has to be damp but not watery.
For better rooting, you can impregnate the base with powdered rooting hormones, which are for sale in nurseries.

This is why I have some doubts. I have some that I bought recently and they told me that I should water them only once a month with 50 ml of water (they are small) that amount and time is okay? They told me it was indoor, so I haven't taken it out in the sun for a day. How often is it advisable to take it out in the sun and for how long? What other plants could I use to make a terrarium or pots? Water sticks or houseplants use the same planting system? I am very inexperienced in plant and any advice I will be very grateful. Thanks a lot!

      Hi Geraldine.
Let me explain: cacti are not indoor. They have to be in a very bright area. They do not live well in semi-shade, much less in shade. That is why they have to be exposed to sunlight little by little and gradually: for 15 days expose them for 2 hours in the sun, for the next 15 days for 3 hours, and so on until they are in the sun all day. It starts in spring, when it is still not very strong, to avoid burning them.

As for watering: you have to water them once a week in summer and every 15-20 days the rest of the year. The amount will vary depending on the size of the pot, but if they are small, 250ml can go well. You will know if you have watered well if the water comes out of the drainage holes of the pot.

To make a composition of succulents I recommend you read this article y this other.

Any plant can be in a pot, but depending on the variety it will need more water than another. For example, the water stick must be watered almost as often as a cactus, but geraniums need very frequent waterings.

      A greeting.

    Hello how are you?
A few months ago I bought 4 cacti of different species but in these times it is too cold, I would like to know what care I should take to them at this time, taking into account that they are just my first cacti in my life

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi sweetie.
I recommend you protect them from frost and especially from hail and snow. If it tends to freeze or snow in your area, you should keep them indoors, in a very bright room without drafts. Water them little, once every 20 days.
This is how they will get ahead.
      A greeting.

    Hey.

I have read the comments but I do not know if I am doing it well, I have a small cactus that I brought from another place that is warmer and I have it on the terrace where it is sometimes colder, I want to know how to protect it and also has a plant next to it It is growing strong and they need different care like water. What can I do so that not one of them dies?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Fernanda.
If in your area the temperature drops below 0 degrees, it is necessary that you keep it indoors in a very bright room without drafts.
Water it little, once every 15-20 days in autumn and winter, and the rest of the year every 4-6 days. If you have a plate underneath, remove the excess water ten minutes after watering.
      A greeting.

Hello good a year ago they gave me a cactus and I have it in the room, it was fine and I had no problem but recently two children have fallen, this is bad, why can I do it?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Ander.
It may not give you the light you need. Cacti need direct sunlight in order to grow.
If you haven't transplanted it yet, I recommend transferring it to a pot about 3cm wider in spring.
      A greeting.

I apologize if someone has already asked: I did not get to read all the comments, although I did read many.
My question is: A cactus breeder from a specialized nursery told me - I asked him that - that they have cacti in a state of stress, that is, in very small pots and with only half full of soil, and with dry soil. Totally, because thus, for survival, the cacti take flowers (and then they obtain seeds) by the genetic "need" to propagate. Is this true, is it a particular practice of this gentleman, or was he making fun of me?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Eduardo.
What he told you makes sense, but it shouldn't be done. The plant wears out a lot, and it blooms with the intention of producing seeds, that is, of having children and thus propagating the species. That is a reaction that many plants have that are having a really bad time.
I do not advise it. Well-cared for cacti, with soil and compost, also flourish, but unlike the former, they do not run the risk of dying from it.
      A greeting.

Hello, good afternoon, they gave me a captus and it already took. 5 months with it I water it every 15 or 20 days but I see that it is turning yellow, what should I do I don't want to. Q die thanks

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello leidy.
It may be that it lacks light. If you have it indoors, I recommend taking it outside, in a place protected from direct sun.
In the event that you already have it out, please write to us again and we will tell you what to do.

Hello, good afternoon. I have a cactus that I planted from a small branch and it grew but the ears are lowered and they scorch a bit. I do not know if it is indoor or it lacks water or the pot is very small. Can you tell me what you think? Thanks

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Ana.
The cacti have to be outside, in a very bright area.
If you have never changed the pot you should do it in spring, using a universal growing substrate mixed with perlite or river sand washed in equal parts.
      A greeting.

    Hello
I would like to know what is done when my cactus is very long and twists a little, I read that it had to be cut and planted elsewhere but I don't know how to do it without damaging it.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Jeancarlo.
I recommend more to put it in a place where it receives more light. So you can have better growth and development.

Hello, about 2 months ago I bought a cactus, it is a yellow nopal, but a few days ago the stem has a strange yellow or brown color and it has become skinny as if it does not have water inside or something like that, and I want it to improve that I can do to make it get better?
More sun? Less sun? I water it every week or sometimes before
    What I can do ?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Alexandra.
This cactus needs direct sun and little water; with two irrigations a week in summer and one every 15 days the rest of the year will be fine.
Anyway, if you haven't changed the pot, I advise you to do it in spring.
      A greeting.

Hello, good afternoon, they gave me a small cactus, for the office that by the way they told me that it did not grow; I have it for 15 days and the truth is it is growing a lot, it is normal that they grow so much as I water it once a week. And it is in a small pot

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Juan Fernando.
In order for cacti to grow well, they need to be in a bright place, preferably outdoors, since indoors they etiolate (that is, they grow a lot and very fast looking for light).
In addition to taking it to a place with more light, I would recommend transferring it to a somewhat larger pot in spring.
      A greeting.

    Hello good day
The information I have obtained in this blog is very good.
Hopefully they can advise me to save my cactus.
They gave me a cactus called Bishop's Bonnet, in very bad condition, from the middle down it looks almost dry, this was probably due to the fact that it was not completely buried, very little. I transplant it into a cactus substrate bed, I have it in half shade. I paid it with pieces of banana peel that they recommended. That will be enough to save it or what else can I do since I am interested that this species can keep it in good condition. I thank you in advance for your support.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Rolando.
All good, except for the banana peel. I'll tell you why: the roots of cacti do not know what to do with organic fertilizers, since in their place of origin there is hardly any organic matter -plants, animals- decomposing, only minerals. That is why mineral fertilizers should be used for cacti like the one they already sell ready to use in nurseries.
      A greeting.

    good morning.
I am Enrique from Valencia. I am starting the world of the cactus and I do not have much idea to say nothing. You say, that you have to put black substrate and perlite, I do not know how much and how many times you have to do it. If you could advise me I would be very happy. They are very boitas and I would not like to spoil it.
    thanks greetings

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Enrique Javier.
You can mix the universal substrate -which are sold in nurseries- in equal parts with perlite, that is, 50%. With this you already have a suitable substrate for cacti 🙂

If you have any further questions, ask.

      A greeting.

Thank you for answering me. I have a question.
So then, should I transplant them now or what time would be good?
I already tell you that I am not very knowledgeable on the subject, sorry for my ignorance.
    Thanks again.
    all the best

HELLO, GOOD AFTERNOON, MY CACTUS SUFFERED A FALL SEVERAL DAYS AGO AND DID DROP IT OUT OF ITS POT, I SEED IT AGAIN TO THE LEVEL IT WAS BEFORE, AND THEN THEY TROUGH IT TO ME AGAIN AFTER THAT I JUST NOTICED TODAY THAT SOME OF THE BALLS OR SPROUTS THAT HAD COME OUT AND IN THE BOTTOM IT IS GETTING NEGRITO AND THE BALLS FALL OUT I AM VERY CONCERNED BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO DIE WHAT CAN I BE? HELP !!!!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Juliana.
      Don't worry: it will recover.
It is normal that after those falls that he has suffered, he is getting like this. But put it in an area where a lot of natural light enters (better if you have it outside the house), and water it once or twice a week in summer and every 10-15 days the rest of the year.
      A greeting.

Hi there! Greetings, hey I have a question, what happens is that recently my cactus that came in a small pot (it was well cared for, it had a very bright color, it had a firm bark and thick thorns were beginning to come out) I wanted to transplant it to my garden, and in a matter of a day or two it started to get dry weak it started to put brown and the flowers that it looked like it was going to give wilted without finishing growing. I currently transplanted it into another larger pot with pores to leak its water, and its condition did not continue to worsen, but it did not improve either 🙁. Could you help me to know if my precious cactus will be fine and give me some advice for its care please? By the way, I water it every 3 or 2 days and I have it in a place where it gets direct sun, I am from a dry cold area in central Mexico. Thanks!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Arturo
It was probably sunburned. Cacti are plants that have to be exposed to the sun's rays, but if they don't get used to it before they burn.
My advice is to put it in semi-shade and gradually and gradually put it in the sun (one more hour each week).
      A greeting.

Hi, I have a cactus approx. 6 months ago and should not measure more than 9 cm., It was a single oval leaf that had 5 new shoots (and now two 2 more), it is beautiful, but now each shoot (which must have approximately a few 5 to 6 cm.) They are already growing new shoots !!! at least 3 each. I am glad to see my cactus so cute, but my question stems from the fact that I am concerned that new shoots will destabilize the main stem with weight and I want to know if I should remove the first shoots and transplant them so that their own shoots grow. better, or on the contrary removing them will make the last shoots no longer develop and die. What should I do?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Carla.
I recommend planting it in a larger pot, if you haven't already. This will allow your cactus to grow larger and therefore have more strength.
You can also remove the leaves that you consider "heavy", but boy, is not necessary. Tying it to a stick will do you good.
      A greeting.

    Good,
I have returned from 10 days of vacation and I have found my cactus soft and a little on the side already (July in a town in Toledo), I watered it the day before I left and previously I had not watered it for 15 days (due to previous losses I discovered what happens to me before).
After reading I think it may be because of the dark conditions that leave the room, when it gets hot at home.
could I get it back? What I can do?

Thank you very much for your help

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Laura.
I recommend you keep it in a room as bright as possible; in fact, if you have a balcony or terrace, it would be ideal to have it outside (protected from the sun) since cacti do not live very well indoors.

Transfer it to a larger pot, with holes, and fill it with universal substrate mixed with perlite in equal parts. Water thoroughly once a week or so.

      Luck!
