Snowdrop is one of the most beautiful and elegant bulbous plants. Although it only grows to 15 centimeters in height, its delicate little white flowers create a spectacle like no other in early spring.
But What care do we have to provide to be able to contemplate its beauty? They are not complicated, but to make them even simpler we are going to help you 🙂.
What is the snowdrop like?
Before knowing how to take care of it, we have to know its characteristics so that we can find it faster when we go to a nursery 😉. Our protagonist is a bulbous plant native to the temperate regions of Europe, where it lives in beech forests between 700 and 1400 meters, whose scientific name is galanthus nivalis. It is characterized by having linear leaves of a dark green color that reach up to 10 cm in height, and bell-shaped flowers composed of 6 tepals: 3 external and 3 internal white.. These sprout in late winter and early spring.
It is an ideal plant to have either in a pot or under deciduous trees. But let's see better what care it needs.
How do you take care of yourself?
If you get a few bulbs, these are the care they require:
- Location: outside, in semi-shade.
- Soil or substrate: it is not demanding, but prefers those that are slightly acidic and have good drainage.
- Irrigation: biweekly.
- Subscriber: it can be paid with liquid fertilizers for bulbous plants following the indications specified on the packaging.
- Bulb planting time: in autumn, about 2cm deep.
- Multiplication: by separation of bulbs in spring / summer, when the plant has run out of its aerial part (leaves and flowers).
- Rusticity: grows in cool climates, with frosts down to -15ºC. Still, in somewhat warmer climates it can also thrive if the soil is kept moist (not waterlogged).
