Sowing modalities: information on the different types

Siembra

The seeds can be sown in several different ways, depending on the species, the type of seed, the desired earliness, etc. To guarantee success, basic rules must be taken into account: the seeds have sufficient nutritional reserves for a certain time, and if they are sown too deep, or we wait a long time to sow them, these reserves will be depleted.

In this article we will talk about the different ways to plant the seeds.

As a general rule, the seed should be sown at a depth equal to its diameter. In the case of very small and flat seeds, they are sown on the surface of the substrate, covering them with a very thin layer of soil (thick enough so that the wind cannot carry them away).

You also have to control the humidity of the substrate. A too humid substrate is a substrate in which the air circulation is insufficient, and this means that many diseases and problems appear. Or if, on the contrary, it is too dry, it can cause desiccation of the seeds.

The most commonly used sowing methods are listed below.

Sowing in the field

Sowing in the field

Direct sowing in the field is that sowing in which the sower spreads the seeds on the ground, where he wants them to germinate. It is the technique used mostly by farmers or those who want to enjoy their garden. It is only possible to do so during the viability period of the seed, and as long as the climatic conditions allow it.

How is it sown in the field?

  1. The first and most important thing is to remove the weeds, either by hand, with a hoe, or, if the field is very large, with a rototiller.
  2. The soil will then be leveled with a rake.
  3. The land can be fertilized with worm humus, horse manure or with the organic fertilizer that we like the most.
  4. Later, if you like, the grooves will be made.
  5. We will proceed to sowing, and later to cover the furrows a little.
  6. Finally, it will be watered abundantly.

Sowing in seedbeds

Sowing in seedbed

It is perhaps the most used technique among gardening enthusiasts. Proceed as follows:

  1. The substrate or mixture that we are going to use is prepared.
  2. The pot is filled with the substrate.
  3. The seeds are sown.
  4. And, finally, it is watered abundantly.

Sowing in single or multiple containers

Sowing in containers

It is the one used the most by those dedicated to the production of plants, since these containers allow a greater and better control of the seedlings, and this largely prevents them from having problems or diseases, in addition to facilitating subsequent transplantation. There are several types of containers:

  • Honeycomb plates
  • Peat pellets (better known as Jiffy)
  • Individual pots

It proceeds in the same way as in the sowing in seedbeds.

Sowing in greenhouses

Greenhouses are very useful when it comes to propagating species during the coldest months of the year, since they allow to control the temperature in an effective way.

They come in many sizes and shapes. At the amateur level, miniature greenhouses are used, which are more manageable.

Greenhouse cultivation allows seeds to be sown whenever the sower wants, as long as the viability period of said seeds is taken into account.
