How is the sowing of the blueberry?

Vaccinium corymbosum, the bilberry

The blueberry is a beautiful evergreen shrub whose fruits, round in shape and bluish or red in color depending on the variety, have been consumed for a long time to prevent and treat many of the diseases that we can have throughout our lives such as: diabetes , cardiovascular problems, colds and urinary tract diseases.

For all these reasons, adding that it is a plant that can always be grown in a pot, it is interesting to know how is the sowing of the blueberry.

What materials do I need?

Plastic pots for plants

To sow the seeds of blueberry We need the following:

  • Hotbed: it can be a flowerpot, a plastic / cork tray with holes, milk containers or yogurt glasses (you also have to make at least one hole in them), peat tablets.
  • Substratum: it can be 100% vermiculite, or universal growing substrate mixed with 30% perlite or previously washed river sand.
  • Watering can with water: it can be small, of the 2 liters.
  • Label: to write the name of the plant and the sowing date on it.
  • Seeds: of course, they cannot be absent.

When is it sown?

The blueberry is a plant that finish fruiting towards the beginning of summer (June in the Northern Hemisphere), so it is highly recommended to get its fruits at that time of the year, since in this way its biological cycles will be respected. But where to buy the seeds? Well, the ideal thing will always be to get them from the bush itself, but if it can't be, we can buy them in nurseries and online stores.

How is it sown?

Now that we have it all and we know when to sow it, it's time to follow this step by step:

  1. The first thing we have to do is fill the seedbed that we have chosen with substrate completely.
  2. Afterwards, we moisten the substrate well.
  3. Then, we place the seeds on the surface, at a distance of about 2-3cm from each one.
  4. Next, we cover them with a thin layer of substrate, thin enough so that they are not exposed directly to the sun.
  5. Finally, we moisten the earth a little, and we put the label.

Now, the only thing left is to place the seedbed outside, in semi-shade, and keep the substrate always slightly damp. Thus, in a couple of months the first blueberries will germinate.
