Our protagonist is a herb whose scientific name is Spelled triticum native to the Near East, although today it is found in practically all temperate regions of the world. In fact, in the north of Spain it has been cultivated for about five millennia, or what comes to be the same, from the beginning of agriculture. Their common names are spelled, spelled wheat, greater escaña or greater spelled.

It is a very fast growing annual herb that reaches a height of about 40-50cm. The leaves are tapered, green, and the flowers are grouped in spike-shaped inflorescences. The fruit is dry, inside which are the seeds in the form of grain.

For the cultivation of spelled to be useful, it is necessary to take into account the following:

  • Location: it has to be sown outdoors, in a field.
  • Earth: it is indifferent as long as it has good drainage.
  • Irrigation: frequent. It must be watered every 1-2 days in the hottest season and every 2-3 days the rest of the year.
  • Subscriber: it is advisable to pay with organic fertilizers, such as guano or herbivorous animal manure.
  • Multiplication: by seeds in spring. Direct sowing in the field.
  • Rusticity: does not support frost.
