Tabernaemontana, a genus of plants perfect for tropical hedges

Tabernaemontana hedge

Have you ever heard of a genus of plants known as tabernaemontana? If you live in a warm climate and you are looking for a bush to have as a hedge ... you will love this one.

Let's know more about this interesting species.

Tabernaemontana divaricata

tabernaemontana is the botanical name for this very special genus. It comprises about 40 species, all of them with similar characteristics, originating from the tropical forests of Asia, Africa and America. Its precious aromatic flowers They are white in color, and some of them are very reminiscent of other shrubs that also deserve our interest: that of the Plumeria. In fact, they belong to the same family (apocynaceae). They can reach between 1 and 15 meters, but if you see that it is growing too much, you can control its growth through pruning carried out towards autumn or early spring (If you live in an area where there are no seasons, only rainy season and dry season, prune your plant in those months with less heat).

Its growth rate, like that of its closest relatives, we could say that it is not excessively slow. Not fast either, but certainly you will see changes from one year to the next.

It needs to be located in a location where it has direct sunlight, since otherwise its development will not be adequate. You can use it both as an isolated specimen - in the image you can see how well a Tabernaemontana looks like a shrubby tree alone -, or as a hedge to delimit paths, or as a protective barrier covering a wall or fence.

It is very sensitive to cold, so if the thermometer drops below 0 degrees it is convenient to keep it indoors with lots of light until the good weather returns. Likewise, you also have to control the irrigation, as an excess could be harmful to it.

What did you think of the Tabernaemontana? It is spectacular, don't you think?

    Hola!

Do you know if this plant is poisonous (I want to make a hedge in my house) and I have a little girl and a puppy dog?

By the way, where can I find plants of this variety and / or seeds? Where I live in Mallorca it seems impossible to get them

      Hello Fabian,
Yes, all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested. The, for example, Artemisia absinthium on the other hand is not only not harmful to health but, in fact, it is medicinal.
      A greeting.
