Codiaeum variegatum

Our protagonist is known by the scientific name of Codaeum variegatum. It is native to India and the western islands of the Pacific Ocean. It is an evergreen shrub whose height is one 3 meters. Its leaves are large, about 5-30cm long, and leathery. The flowers appear distributed in inflorescences. Its fruit is a small capsule, 9mm in diameter, which contains 3 seeds.

It has a medium-fast growth rate, especially if the climate is warm. In temperate climates it is grown as a houseplant, as it is very sensitive to cold and frost. Its ideal minimum temperature should be above 14ºC, otherwise its leaves would fall.

Codiaeum

The croton must be placed in a very bright room so that its leaves remain as precious as ever. Of course, it is necessary to avoid direct sunlight, as it could cause burns. Likewise, it is important that the ambient humidity is high. To do this, you can put glasses or bowls with water around it, or spray it once a week. Thus, you are sure that you will not have problems. 🙂

Irrigation has to be frequent, avoiding drying the substrate. Usually, It will be watered about 3 times a week in the summer period and every five days the rest of the year. You can take the opportunity to add liquid fertilizer once every 15 days to the irrigation throughout the growing season.

Do you have a croton at home?

Hello. Thank you first of all for the opportunity you give me. I live in Venezuela in the city of the beloved sun. For this reason, the sun is very strong and I have a croton petra inside the house, near a window and I have air conditioning because the heat exceeds 40 ° C daily. Its leaves are not erect but low head. It will be that it was 2 days ago because it rained so that it could bathe in the rain or that it was transplanted into a larger pot. Please help me. What I do?

      Hi Zulay.

Air conditioning is probably getting to you. If you can, take it to a room where there are no drafts.

It can also be useful to fertilize it a little, with a universal liquid planting fertilizer following the instructions on the package.

      Greetings and good luck!

      Hi carmen.

Are there drafts in that room? Even if they are warm, it is important to keep the plant away from it as otherwise it will dry out.

How often do you water it? If you have it indoors, it should not be watered more than 2 or 3 times a week in summer, and every 4 or 5 days (or more) the rest of the year. In the event that you have a plate underneath, it is very important to remove the excess water after each irrigation so that the roots do not rot.

We hope we have been helpful. Greetings!
