To have a magnificent tree living and staying healthy in a tray takes many years of hard work and dedication. Patience is an important virtue that every bonsaist must have if you want your plant to look gorgeous.

With perseverance and respecting the cycles of the tree, real wonders have been created. Some are staggeringly old. These are the oldest bonsai in the world.

If we have to talk about old bonsai, a good way to start is with this work that, although it may not seem like it, is still in the training phase. He has an approximate age of 1000 years, something really amazing. It can be seen at the Kato family's bonsai nursery in Omiya, Japan.

This beautiful juniper is aged 800 years. An astonishing age considering that it is on a tray and not on the floor. Currently cared for by master Kunio Kobayashi, it is exhibited at the Shunka-en bonsai museum in Japan.

This wonder is also in Japan. It is in very good hands, as Master Kobayashi is taking care of it. He has an approximate age of 800 years, and it is so well worked that has achieved the prestigious Japanese Prime Minister Award 4 times.

This is probably the best known bonsai on the entire planet. He survived the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima in 1945, but his life began much earlier, around 1600. It was cared for by the Japanese Yamaki family until it was donated to the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum in Washington.
