Almond trees are very beautiful deciduous trees: they have a wide crown, which is filled with beautiful white or pink flowers during early spring, and they also bear edible fruits that are delicious even immature. But if you want to enjoy them it is very important to take into account some things, since otherwise problems will not take long to arise.

So so that this does not happen to you, I am going to offer you a series of tips on planting almond trees.

Fall or late winter, good time to plant them

Almonds in Prunus dulcis

The almond trees, whose scientific name is AlmondThey are trees that lose their leaves in autumn-winter. This means that they rest from then until spring, so that if you want to plant them in your orchard or garden the best time to do it is when they have no foliage. Why? Because it is a time when there is no risk -or this is minimal- that sap will be lost as there is almost no growth. Of course, if there are late frosts do it better at the end of winter, otherwise the plants would have a bad time.

Plant them in a well-drained, loamy soil

These plants like clay soil, with good drainage. I have seen them grow even in those lands that have been somewhat punished. So they can be alright I advise planting them in soils that have these two characteristics: pH between 6 and 7, and good water filtration capacity.

Leave a separation of about three meters between them

Almond trees are trees that do not grow much in height (about 5-6 meters), but they do grow in width. Its crown extends up to 3-4 meters, and although it can be pruned so that it is not so wide, you have to know that doing so would mean having fewer almonds. Thus, it is highly advisable to leave a minimum of 5 meters between tree and tree, since this way they will be able to develop correctly.

Drill a deep planting hole

Almond

The roots are strong, but the ideal is to make their rooting a little easier. Hence it is highly recommended make a deep planting hole, 1m x 1meven though the trees are young. In this way, I assure you that they will feel "at home" in less time than you think.

Before removing them from the pots, pour a couple of buckets of water into the holes so that it can be absorbed by the root system.
