How is it?

First of all, let's see what are the characteristics of tulbalgia. Our protagonist It is a rhizomatous herbaceous plant native to southern Africa that reaches a height of 70cm. Its scientific name is Tulbaghia violacea, and has linear leaves 17-50cm long by 0,35-0,7cm wide. The flowers are grouped in bright purple erect umbel-shaped inflorescences. The fruit is capsule-shaped.

Its growth rate is quite fast, blooming from the second year after sowing. And since it does not have invasive roots, it can even be planted next to walls or walls.

What are their cares?

If you want to get a copy, we recommend providing the following care. In this way you will be able to decorate your garden or your patio with a unique and really beautiful plant, and keep it for a long time with ease:

Location

Tulbagia can be both inside and outside the home, although in both places it must be in an area where there is a lot of light. In fact, if it is kept outside it is more advisable to place it in a sunny place rather than in one that is a little protected from the rays of the star king, since although it will grow equally well in both, the longer it is exposed to direct sunlight, the more possibilities it will have of producing a greater number of flowers .

If the cultivation will be indoors, it must be placed in a room where there are windows through which a lot of light comes in from outside. What's more, if possible, it is best to place it near the window, either underneath or next to one. It should never be put right in front, because doing so would risk getting it burned by the sun. And it is that we often think that glass offers protection against solar rays, but the reality is that as soon as they pass through it, they are amplified, and if they hit a leaf, they burn it.

Therefore, I repeat, do not put a plant in front of the window, and much less if it is oriented to the east, which is where the sun rises in the northern hemisphere.

Earth

This it is a plant that needs rich soils, capable of absorbing water quickly but also filtering it well. For this reason, in compact and poor soils, a planting hole of about 40 x 40 centimeters must be made in order to later be able to cover its sides -except the base- with plastic or a piece of shading mesh. Then, it is filled with universal culture substrate mixed with 30% perlite as this.

If you are going to have it in a pot, it is convenient to know that it can be filled with the substrate mentioned above, but also with others such as coconut fiber. (on sale here). Likewise, it must be remembered that said pot must have holes in its base so that the water that the earth has filtered moves away from the roots. Therefore, it is not good to put a plate under the container, unless it runs off after each watering.

Irrigation

Tulbalgia needs moderate watering. As usual, It must be watered 2-3 times a week in summer, and every 4-5 days the rest of the year and even less if it rains and / or the soil is still wet. If in doubt, you can use a moisture meter like this, which will indicate almost automatically what degree of humidity it has at that moment.

Subscriber

From spring to summer with an organic compost, like guano. Another option is to use fertilizers for flowering plants, such as thisBecause, after all, the main attraction of tulbalgia is the flowers, and we want it to produce as many as it can.

Planting or transplanting time

The most recommended time to plant it in the ground or in a new pot is in spring, when temperatures begin to recover after winter. It must be done with care, avoiding manipulating the roots.

Multiplication

By seeds or rhizomes in spring. We will use a seedling tray like this for the first ones, or a small pot of about 10,5cm in diameter for the rhizome, and soil for seedlings as a substrate for both that you can buy here.

Rusticity

Withstands cold and frost up to -3 ° C.

What uses does it have?

Tulbalgia is a plant that it is used as an ornamental, since it looks great both in the garden and in a pot. But also, in 2006 it was shown to have anticancer properties, so it would not be surprising if it was used medicinally.

It is beautiful, I have it in the middle of the terrace, only it has that characteristic medium garlic smell that it releases even without touching it, its care is minimal and its flowering lasts.
    Excellent article published.
