Milk for irrigation

Calathea zebrina

It would not be strange to think that it is a good idea to water with it, after all and as we said before, it is very nutritious. However, the reality is very different. Milk is 150% thicker than water, and this in itself is already a serious problem, since the thicker the liquid we give to the plants, the more difficulties your xylem will have (that is, the tissue through which the sap is transported by all parts of the plant) to distribute the nutrients.

But in addition, it must be borne in mind that milk is not only composed of water, but also of proteins, lactose, lipids and carbohydrates. Over time, bacteria break down the lactose, causing it to start to smell bad. to rot. Water can also contain microorganisms, such as bacteria or fungi, but it will never curdle, and therefore it will never be able to clog the pores of the leaves or the roots.

Can it be used in any way to care for plants?

Philodendron bipinnatifidum

Although it is not recommended for irrigation, we can use it to make the leaves shine more. To do this, we only have to moisten a cloth with whole milk, and clean the plant.

But I'll tell you something else: it is also an excellent preventative fungicide. You only have to dilute a part of whole milk in 10 of water. Of course, it is important to respect this formula, since if more milk were added than it touched, the remedy would be worse than the disease as other types of fungi would appear.
