Our protagonist is a deciduous tree whose scientific name is acer velutinum, but known as velvety maple. It is native to Azerbaijan, Georgia, and northern Iran. It can exceed 40 meters in height, with a trunk diameter greater than 1m. Its crown is wide, composed of branches that are green during youth and reddish-brown when mature.

The leaves are 15-25cm wide, palmate, green in spring and reddish in autumn before falling. The flowers appear grouped in vertical inflorescences 8 to 12cm long, greenish-yellow in color. The fruit is a double samara consisting of a seed with a wing.
