What is a perennial plant?

Astilbe is a lively plant

There are many, many types of plants, and many ways to classify them. Depending on their life expectancy, we have annuals, bi-annuals, perennials, and perennials. This time we are going to explain to you what a vivacious plant is, which are the most popular species and how they are cared for.

So you can choose the ones you like the most, getting the garden, patio or terrace of your dreams with ease. Go for it.

What is a perennial plant?

The coreopsis is a very pretty flower

Perennial plants are those that live several years (There are those who say more than 3, others more than 5 ... But in any case they are species whose life cycle is more than two years). They are very similar to perennials, but they are distinguished because while perennials do not wither, our protagonists do. That is the way they have to survive either the winter if they are from temperate or cold climates, or the summer if on the contrary they are from hot climates.

Are bulbous plants perennial?

They might well fit into that category, of course. But since they are plants that have an organ that thickens - the bulb - from which a few roots sprout that serve more as an anchor, they are usually studied as a separate group.

The root system of the perennials is fasciculate, that is, they all come from the same point and are more or less the same length. In any case, in this article we include them in the list in case you are interested in also having some on your patio or balcony and you are not sure which one to put.

How are perennial plants cared for?

View of the Crocus in bloom

I did not want to finish the article without giving you some tips to make it easy for you to keep your vivacious plant healthy and well cared for:

  • Location: the ideal is that they are abroad. The ones we have seen here are mainly sunny, but there are some that you can have in semi-shade such as the wild lily or the astilbe.
  • Earth:
    • Pot: use universal substrate for plants.
    • Garden: they grow in fertile, well-drained soils.
  • Irrigation: about 3 times a week in summer, and every 5-6 days the rest of the year. In the case of bulbous plants, suspend watering after flowering.
  • Subscriber: they will appreciate a regular supply of liquid guano (for sale here) during flowering.
  • Multiplication: by seeds in spring, and bulbous also by separation of bulbs.
  • Pruning: remove dry leaves and wilted flowers when necessary.

Enjoy your plants 😉.
