Let's sow! Tools and accessories

Seedlings in yogurt cups

You can make homemade seedlings, with yogurt cups

This weekend we will plant. I have read the september crop calendar and I have chosen the crops whose sowing ends this month or in October: lettuce, chard, endives, carrots and cauliflowers. So I'm going to need seeds of all this and a few accessories. But, specifically, what do we need to prepare our flowerpot or urban garden?

During the different phases our crops go through, we will need a few specific accessories and tools. In a small garden, such as at home, these tools are different from those used in soil gardens.

How are we going to plant seeds, we will buy in our specialized store (they can also be purchased online) those corresponding to the chosen crop.

We will need seed soil, which is nothing more than a low compost substrate so that it does not burn the small roots.

For the germination of the seeds, we will use seedbeds, that we can buy or make ourselves with yogurt cups, as indicated in the post Potted lettuce.

We will use markers to write down what we have sown. In the first weeks it can be very useful, since until they germinate or grow a few more centimeters, it can be difficult for us to differentiate what type of crop it is, especially if we are starting to create an urban garden.

Homemade markers can be made with toothpicks and cardboard, but there are other more resistant ones, in plastic materials, which are sold in specialized stores.. These labels facilitate organization and are very decorative if we get them in colors, or even with the shape of the vegetable we are growing.

Once the seeds have germinated, we will have to transplant them. For this we will need substrate or compost that enriches the scarce soil of our garden.

And we will choose the container: pots, planters, grow tables or bacsac.

For a small garden on our terrace, whether in pots, planters, bacsac or on cultivation tables, we will not need many tools. It is advisable to get some hand tool, such as a shovel, a hoe or a rake, to perform transplants and some earth movement, as well as pruning shears. To water we will use a watering can and when we have to apply the treatments or water the seedbed, we will use a spray hand.
