All the Herbs They are not usually well received in a garden, since it is often thought that it gives them a neglected appearance, not to mention that, if we let them grow freely, they would end up harming our beloved plants. For this reason, we usually remove them whenever we see them coming out, but ... what do we do with them? Do we throw them away? Better not.
Since everything has its role in nature, why not continue with the cycle? Use the weeds as compost for your plants.
There are countless species of herbs. It is the most successful type of plant, being able to grow in practically all soils and climates -except in extremely cold or hot ones. They do not need anything to survive, only the nutrients that find their roots in the soil, and the rain that may fall. Nothing more. But, as we said, they can be a problem for our flowers or for our garden, so we must, at a minimum, keep them at bay.
How are weeds removed?
Weeds, which are not so bad 🙂, they have to be rooted out, either with a hoe or with the rototiller if we have a large garden. There is no specific time for it; It can be done whenever necessary, which coincides with the wettest months.
How to use weeds as compost?
Once we have cut them, we will remove the roots, and we will place the leaves on a cloth that also serves as a strainer, on top of a bucket. Having put them in place, we will pour water into the bucket, and We will let it ferment for 10 days, during which we will be removing it daily.
What nutrients does weed compost provide?
It depends on the species in question, but for example the dandelionTaraxacum officinale) provides calcium and magnesium, nettle (Urtica) provides nitrogen and iron, and comfrey (Symphytum officinale) provides potassium.
So now you know, take advantage of them to make an excellent compost for your plants. 🙂
Hola!
I have a very nice garden but a very annoying problem with the lawn.
It grows for me between a flower bed that I have planted and I don't know how to prevent it from growing between them. I can't remove it by hand because I end up removing parts of my plants and I can't put any kind of chemical either because it would also kill my plants. because it gives a neglected look and takes away the beauty of my flowers that are coming out. Could you tell me what kind of liquid I can put in such a way that it kills the grass without killing my plants?
Thank you
Hello Begona.
You can try adding salt to the weeds. The salt will dehydrate them, and you can get it out more easily. To do this, you have to dilute 1 part of salt in 8 of water, and add a little liquid soap. It is important that you only spray the herbs you want to remove, as it dries the soil a lot.
A greeting.
Hello Monica!
But the grass that grows between the flowers (It is a plant that spreads throughout the ground forming a flower bed)
When you add what you recommend, it will inevitably fall into my plant, then my plant would kill me and that's what I don't want.
Thank you
Hello Begoña.
I understand. Well then the only thing I can think of is that you try to remove them by hand, or with a hoe. You may inadvertently pull up some grass, but before long that area will be covered again.
I do not recommend chemical herbicides, since they are not selective and, therefore, can leave the area much worse than if you remove the weeds by hand, as they can force you to reseed the lawn.
A greeting.
Thanks Monica.
Well, I will arm myself with patience and I will remove them little by little.
I love your blog and it helps me a lot.
All the best
Thank you for your words. 🙂 We're glad you like the blog (it's not mine, I'm just helping).
I wish I could give you a solution that was faster and that would not harm either the lawn or the plant you like, but I sincerely believe that the best thing is going to be that: removing the weeds by hand.
A greeting.
