They are halophytes, that is, they live in sandy soils, usually from the sea coast, but can also be found in arid soils inland.

They are characterized by growing to a height between 20cm and 2 meters, and its leaves are linear and sub-cylindrical. The flowers are very small, pinkish or greenish in color, and appear in summer and fall.
