The botanical genus Salsola comprises between 100 and 130 species of herbaceous plants native to Asia, America and Europe. They are popularly known as barrilla, boja barrillera, salty black, salao soda, zagua or zajua. They are halophytes, that is, they live in sandy soils, usually from the sea coast, but can also be found in arid soils inland.
They are characterized by growing to a height between 20cm and 2 meters, and its leaves are linear and sub-cylindrical. The flowers are very small, pinkish or greenish in color, and appear in summer and fall.
