Coriander and parsley are two culinary plants that are very easy to grow, but also confusing as they have very similar leaves. For this reason it is important to know how to differentiate them, since depending on what we need them for, we will have to acquire one or the other.

So let's see what are the differences between coriander and parsley.

Both the one and the other plant are very similar; however there are a number of differences that are important to know:

  • Leaves: while those of parsley are very divided and end in tips, those of coriander are more rounded and 'simple'. In addition, although both have them green, the color of the parsley is lighter.
  • Flowers: parsley flowers are greenish-yellow in color, while coriander flowers are white.
  • Seeds: those of the parsley can resemble the pipes in shape although they are much smaller; those of coriander are balls of 1cm in diameter more or less.
  • Odor: coriander gives off a very intense aroma.

Properties

Both have very interesting medicinal properties. In the case of parsley, are the following: antioxidant, blood purifier, diuretic, and prevents cancer.

In the case of cilantro, are: anti-inflammatory, combats anemia, improves the immune system, reduces fat and increases good cholesterol and reduces bad.

  • Location:
    • Outdoors: they have to be put in full sun or in semi-shade.
    • Indoor: in a room with lots of (natural) light.
  • Earth:
    • Pot: fill it with universal growing medium.
    • Garden: it is indifferent as long as it has good drainage.
  • Irrigation: watering will be moderate in the summer, and scarce in winter.
  • Multiplication: by seeds in spring. You have to sow them in a seedbed.
  • Planting or transplanting time: in spring, when the risk of frost has passed. If they are in pots, you have to change them to a larger one every 2 years.
