What are the yellow balls in the potting soil?

Slow release fertilizers

Have you bought a potted plant and when you got home or after a few days have you seen that there are balls in the substrate? If so, you are surely wondering what they are, right? The possibility that they are the eggs of an insect is the first thing that usually comes to mind, since the mere thought that she is sick ... is not pleasant at all.

But calm / a. After reading this article you will know what the yellow balls are in the potting soil and what you have to do to protect the health of your plant.

These balls can be two totally different things from each other:

  • Slow release fertilizer: In practically all nurseries we will find many plants -if not all- that have fertilizer intermixed with the substrate. We will see completely rounded balls inside which there is an almost transparent liquid. Of course, it is not a problem for the pots; rather the opposite since they will help them to have a good growth and development.
  • Insect eggsWhen plants are sick, even if at first glance they seem fine, the insects that cause pests will not hesitate for a moment to do their thing, starting by laying eggs in the shape of a ball with a "beak" somewhere. In addition, if we take them and try to squash them, it will be quite simple. In this case, the soil must be treated with a liquid ovicide that we will find for sale in nurseries following the instructions specified on the product's packaging.

As we have seen, the little yellow balls can mean something very positive, but also something that is not so good. In any case, we will not have to worry about the life of the plants, since with a good treatment the eggs will not hatch.

Hi! Haha I'm writing again because I don't know if I sent it before. The balls that I found have green powder inside, do you know if any compost has this characteristic?

      Hello Juana.

It's probably some kind of fertilizer you found.
The truth is that, although I have knowledge about chemical fertilizers, I'm not very into them hehe I don't know if there are others that have these characteristics; I would say that surely yes, but I cannot confirm it.

      regards

Very good, I have sandy soil and when I made a hole to plant a tree, I found a large number of yellow-orange eggs and when I broke them there is a kind of milk inside. I believe that when the insect hatches and comes out, it feeds on the existing roots. How do I get rid of that many eggs? And there are them wherever you go to plant a tree.

      Hello Jose.

Well, we all have our role in the ecosystem. But it is true that a large number of eggs, if they are insects that become pests, it is better to take action.

A good effective remedy is by putting into practice the solarization, in summer. In the link you have all the information about this method.

      Regards!

      Hi lplay2.

It is possible that it is yes, but I see more possible that it is from some insect. There are usually no worms in plant soils.

      Greetings.
