Knowing more about plants, not only about their care, but also about their characteristics, helps us understand them better. And also, it is a subject that, although it may seem complicated (well, okay, we are not going to fool ourselves: depending on what subjects they are quite enough 🙂) if you have someone to explain it to you, it may be the case that you want to know more .
En Jardinería On we want to be that person, because we love plants. So this time we are going to explain to you what is a fruitlessness.
What is it?
A fruitlessness is the result of the fertilization of a compact inflorescence (group of flowers), as well as the fertilization of the ovule of certain apocarpic flowers (that is, that have the carpels - female reproductive organs with a similar appearance to a leaf but modified that contain the ovules - separated, each one forming a pistil).
In it, the fruits are so close together that it appears that there is only one fruit, which can create confusion. But there is nothing to worry about: we will know if we have a fruit if we open the fruit and observe its internal structure.
What types are there?
Polyaquenium
They are made up of tiny individual fruits with a fleshy receptacle.
Syconus
It is a false fruit with a fleshy receptacle, fleshy in shape, which is covered by small achenes (they are nuts whose seeds are not attached to their skin).
Cinorrodon
It is a false fruit where the receptacle becomes fleshy, and protects many seeds inside.
How are they sown?
Fruitlessness, as we see, can be edible ... or not; In any case, if we want to have new copies, Ideally, we open it to extract the seeds and then sow them in a seedling tray (you can get it here) with universal culture substrate putting a maximum of two in each alveolus.
Then, we will only have to water and place it outside, in semi-shade.
