Licorice is the common name of a perennial herbaceous plant native to the Mediterranean region and whose scientific name is Glycyrrhiza glabra. It reaches a height of up to 1m, with pinnate leaves 7 to 15cm long composed of 9-17 leaflets. The flowers, which sprout in small inflorescences, are purple or pale blue, and are 80 to 120mm long.

As a curiosity, it must be said that its roots are stoloniferous. This means that they develop horizontally and sprout again.

Care

If you want to get a copy, we recommend providing the following care:

  • Location: outside, in full sun.
  • Soil or substrate: it is indifferent as long as it is well drained.
  • Irrigation: frequent. It is advisable to water 3-4 times a week in summer and a little less the rest of the year.
  • Subscriber: from spring to late summer with an organic compost, such as guano, following the indications specified on the package.
  • Planting or transplanting time: in spring.
  • Multiplication: by seeds and by sprouts in spring.
  • Rusticity: withstands cold and frosts down to -7ºC.

Uses

Medicinal

The roots contain substances such as glycyrrhizin or vitamin C that help relieve headaches, colic, infections, colds, sore throats, depression, and menopause. The way to take it is as an infusion.

Culinary and industrial

As we mentioned at the beginning, with licorice baubles are made in the form of gummy bars and pills.
