What is the maintenance of large planters?

Planters

Large pots are incredibly practical: whether we place a group of flowers, succulents or a larger plant such as a tree or a young palm in them, they decorate any corner of the patio or terrace from the first moment.

But as with everything, if you do not take care ... in the end they will spoil. To avoid it (or delay it as much as possible), I will explain how to keep planters large.

What is a biosimilar

But first, let's start at the beginning. When we talk about large pots we refer to those pots, usually without holes (although they may have) in which the pot with the plant is usually inserted. They can be made of different types of materials: plastic, clay, or wood; and also in various sizes, so that it is very easy to find the one that best suits the container that protects the roots of our plants.

What is its maintenance?

The type of maintenance that large planters need will depend, to a large extent, on the material with which they are made. For example:

Plastic flower pots

  • Protected against solar radiation: they are those that are sold already labeled as »outdoor pots». These will be enough to wipe them with water to remove the dirt that may stick to them.
  • Without protectionThese are much cheaper, but they are made of a lower quality plastic. They last many years (in fact, plastic takes centuries to decompose), but for their useful life to be long it is important not to expose them to direct sun, or if we have no choice, give them one or two coats of paint (white, or any other light color to reflect the sun's rays).

Clay pots

They are very pretty. It is true that they weigh theirs, but they are an interesting option if what we are looking for is elegance, durability and quality all in one. So that they last us a long time, we must do the following:

  • Remove any dirt they may have.
  • Immerse them in cold water for 24 hours to avoid cracking as soon as you buy them and once a year.
  • Soak them in oil or virgin wax heated and diluted with turpentine in equal parts, also once a year.

Wooden flower pots

The wooden ones are amazing, but water is their main enemy. To prevent them from ending up in the compost heap early, we recommend doing the following:

  • Treat them with wood oil once a year.
  • Do preventive treatments against moths, also once a year or every two.
  • Keep them clean.
  • If you live in a humid area, where it usually rains regularly, protect them from the rains.

And with this we are done. We hope these tips are useful to you.
