What to sow in February

Hotbed

February is one of the coldest of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Temperatures in many regions can drop below zero, damaging many plants and especially seeds. In fact, it is not usually recommended to prepare seedbeds at this time, although when it comes to horticultural plants, things change.

For this reason, we are going to tell you what to sow in February so you can start the season a little earlier than usual. 🙂

Direct sowing in the garden

You can sow the following horticultural plants in the garden:

How are they sown?

To sow them in the ground, you have to do the following:

  1. The first and most important thing is to prepare the ground, removing wild herbs and stones.
  2. Next, add a 2-3cm thick layer of compost, such as manure or worm castings.
  3. Then, with a rake, level the ground.
  4. Then, install the irrigation system (highly recommended to use drip).
  5. Now, make grooves leaving a distance between them of 30-35cm.
  6. Finally, place small piles of seeds (no more than 4 units) leaving a distance of 30-40cm between them, and water.

How are they sown?

To sow them in a seedbed, you have to do the following:

  1. The first thing is to choose what to use as a seedbed. The ideal are plastic seedling trays, but you can use glasses of yogurt, milk containers, peat tablets, ... in short, whatever is closest to hand.
  2. Now, it must be filled -if it proceeds- with black peat mixed with 30% perlite, or with substrate for seedlings -you will find it for sale in nurseries-.
  3. Then, it is watered well, so that it is well soaked.
  4. Next, a maximum of 2 seeds are placed in each socket / container / peat pellet.
  5. Finally, they are covered with a little substrate, and watered with a sprayer.

And ready. In a matter of a few days the first 🙂 will begin to germinate. Good planting!
