What to use to fertilize the palm trees?

Dwarf palm

Palm trees are plants that look great in any corner, whether in the garden or planted in pots to decorate the terrace or patio. And it is that, of the more than 3 species that there are, there are many that can be cultivated in every climatic zone of the world, except in the poles of course 🙂.

However, keeping them as beautiful as the first day will require providing a series of care, one of the main ones being the regular subscriber. But, What to use to fertilize palm trees?

The fertilizer of the garden palms

Fertilizer

When you have palm trees planted on the ground It is highly recommended to fertilize with organic fertilizers in powder, like the one you can see in the image above. Being organic matter in the decomposition process, it is ideal to guarantee the proper development of plants as it also improves the properties of the soil, making it looser and more fertile.

There are many types of organic fertilizers, the following being the most recommended: different types of manure, guano of a bat or a penguin, earthworm humus. In the blog you will find information about each of them by clicking on the names. All of them are more or less slow release, this means that the roots can absorb what they need and when they need it.

Composting potted palms

Chemical fertilizer for plants

When you have potted palms, growing conditions change. The roots, being in a limited place such as the pot, cannot grow more than the container itself allows, which means that the fertilizer is even more important, since we not only have to give them that extra food they need, but also that food does not have to worsen the drainage of the water since otherwise we would suffocate the plants.

With what to pay them then? It is highly recommended to fertilize with mineral fertilizers, or with liquid organic fertilizers. In both cases, the indications specified on the product package must be followed to avoid the risk of overdose. You should know that they have a quick release, so the effect is almost immediate (not instantly, but the next day you may notice something 😉).

Too little nitrogen. Better one 11-5-12.

worm castings may or may not be fertilized for palm trees

      Hello Jesus.

Yes, it can also be used to fertilize palm trees, but it is not a very complete fertilizer for them. It is preferable to put guano on them, or cow manure if they are on the ground; or a liquid fertilizer if they are in pots.

      Regards!

Hello, I'm from Cordoba… I'm growing Pindo palm tree seedlings. After a year and a half, some already have a height of 40 cm, while the majority have remained at 10 cm (average). I have done the care and irrigation with all the same, but the results are bad in my opinion. How do I continue… ..will I have to keep waiting, or try some chemical fertilizer? ……… .or should I definitively discard those that did not reach the height of the least? Thank you very much and blessings . Sept. 27/2020.

Hello!!! with what can I fertilize and fertilize pindò palm trees? Thank you so much !

      Hi Claudia.

You can use any prepared fertilizer specifically for palm trees. Other options are compost, guano, mulch.
If your plant has or usually has yellowish leaves, it is also highly recommended to apply it from time to time and always alone (that is, without combining it with anything) a biostimulant.

      Greetings.

Hello good, my Cocotera palm has turned very yellowish, what can I add?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi JPP.

Do you have it in a pot or on the ground? Coconut trees are very vulnerable to a disease called lethal yellowing, which causes these symptoms (yellow leaves, decay, stops producing fruit ...). It is present only in tropical regions, and unfortunately there is no treatment.

However palm trees may have yellow leaves for other reasons: excess irrigation, lack of nutrients. The coconut tree wants a lot of water, but when it is grown in a pot it is better if it has holes in the base and that a plate is not put under it, because otherwise it will rot. It can also yellow if it is cold: if the temperature falls below 15ºC it suffers damage.

      Greetings.

Hello, I have several palm trees and two of them are the real Cuban one, I planted them in the ground, and I don't know what happened to them because one of them has dried up and the other one is regular, I would appreciate your help and any advice, thanks!

      Hello Jose.
What size are they? It is that if they are very large (more than 2m) it is very difficult for them to overcome the transplant, especially if it is from soil to soil (if it is from pot to soil they suffer much less, since the roots are hardly manipulated).

Also, you have to take into account that if they were in the shade or semi-shade, when they are exposed to the sun abruptly, without first acclimating them, they burn. To prevent the one you have left from getting worse, and if this is your case, then it would be good to put shade mesh on it as a sunshade, and leave it on for at least the middle of the day.

Another thing, how do you take care of it? We must avoid watering it too much, because sometimes we think that a plant that is drying up is because it needs water, when in reality what is happening is that it is drowning. For this reason, I do not recommend watering it more than 4 times a week now in the summer, or 5 if the temperatures are very high (35 degrees or more) and continue for several days/weeks.
