When and how are grass seeds sown?

The grass is planted in spring

The grass is a fantastic carpet on which both children and not so young children can lie down and enjoy the sun, the fresh wind, and of course also our loved ones, regardless of whether they have two legs or four legs. Yes, indeed: dogs and cats can also have a great time in it, either resting or playing.

So you may wonder when and how to plant grass in the garden. And you would do well since if you sowed it for example in winter you would risk that many seeds would spoil. So we are going to solve your doubts.

When to plant grass seeds?

Well, first it is important to know that the grass is grass (sometimes a single type or species, sometimes a mixture of them) and that these usually want heat and some humidity. Therefore, the ideal time to sow it is in spring. When exactly will depend a lot on the climate of each area.

For example, in my area (south of Mallorca), as it is not really cold (there are only weak and occasional frosts in February, down to -1,5ºC), and in March / April we already have maximums of 20ºC and minimums that exceed the 10ºC many days, the sowing of the lawn can be done without problems in early spring, even earlier (end of February).

In the event that you live in a tropical area, with more or less stable minimum and maximum temperatures, so you can sow it anytime. I will just tell you that, if there is a time when it is hotter and rains less, wait better for it to finish before planting the grass.

How long does it take for grass seed to germinate?

Again, it depends, this time on the species itself as well as the viability of the seed. But to give you an idea, 10-15 days after sowing you have to see how they germinate. It will be when the brown color of the earth begins to mix with the green of the tender grass.

It may be nice, but it can also lead us to think that we have already done it all and that the grass will grow strongly from now on. And it will, but only if we consider that avoid stepping on the area until the grass has grown at least ten centimeters. Don't worry: in a matter of a few weeks it will reach that height.

Now why wait? Well, it is because the seeds of the herbs are very small, one centimeter or less. An adult person weighs an average of 60-70kg, and when we step on the earth just below our feet it "sinks" more or less depending on how loose it is, but enough for a seed to be buried deeper than it is. it should.

The grass needs light to be able to germinate, so much so that it is normal to sow it 'broadcast' and leave it as is. But if before it grows the dogs and / or cats pass through the area, or if we are the ones who walk through the land, those seeds will be lost. Even if the animals relieve themselves, the seedlings will be burned to death. For this reason, it is important that if there are children and / or animals, the area is temporarily valley.

How to plant grass seeds?

If you dare to plant or sow grass, we recommend you follow this step by step:

  1. The first is to prepare the ground: you have to remove the stones and grass, as well as remove the earth with a walking tractor (or a hoe, if the area is small).
  2. Afterwards, you have to level it with a rake. It is not necessary that it be perfect, but it is advisable that there are no 'lumps'.
  3. Install a drip irrigation system. It is essential for the lawn to be healthy.
  4. For a few days, water the ground so that the remaining weed seeds germinate. Once they do, remove them either by passing the rototiller again or with a herbicide (we recommend the rototiller or hoe, as it is less harmful to the environment).
  5. If you see that the land is flooded, spread a layer of quartz sand (or perlite, if it is not very wide, which you can buy here) and mix it with a hoe. Puddling can rot your lawn.
  6. Now, add a layer of about four inches of mulch (for sale here) above and level the ground again. This way you will get the seeds to germinate well, obtaining the nutrients they need from the first day.
  7. Afterwards, you have to sow the seeds of the lawn. An easy way to do it is to take a handful, and spread them around the ground, making sure that there are no piles. Then it will only be left to pass a roller to make it more uniform.
  8. And finally, water.

Enjoy your lawn! Now, you have to take care of it, and you can do it by following these tips:
