When and how to plant blueberries?

Vaccinium corymbosum, the bilberry

The blueberries They are shrubs for garden and pot that, in addition to having a great ornamental value, their fruits are often consumed for their medicinal properties. And, in fact, if we want to have a healthy and efficient urinary system, there is nothing like including them in our diet.

But Do you know when and how to plant blueberries? If you have doubts, then I will try to solve them all. 🙂

When are they planted?

Vaccinium corymbosum leaves

Blueberries are evergreen shrubs native to the cold regions of the northern hemisphere, although we can also find them in Madagascar and Hawaii. They reach heights between 0,50 and 5 meters, depending on the species as well as the conditions of the place where they live (especially the availability of water and nutrients, as well as the competition between plants).

This is important to know because the best time to plant them in the garden or in a pot will be when they are least growing, which is in autumn or late winter.

How are they planted?

Garden

The step by step to follow is as follows:

  1. First, a planting hole of about 50cm x 50cm must be made (if it is 1m x 1m better, since this way the roots will have it even easier to root), in semi-shade or in full sun.
  2. Second, the soil that we have removed is mixed with universal cultivation substrate.
  3. Third, the hole is filled in a bit.
  4. Fourth, the plant is placed in the center, ensuring that the surface of its root ball is between 0,5 and 1cm below ground level.
  5. Fifth, the hole is completed.
  6. Sixth and last, it is watered consciously.

Flower pot

Every two years we must transplant them, as follows:

  1. First, let's prepare a new pot that is at least 4cm wider than the 'old' one.
  2. Afterwards, we fill it with growing medium to a little less than half.
  3. Next, we carefully extract the plant from its »old» pot, and place it in the center of the new one, ensuring that the surface of its root ball is about 0,5cm below the edge of the pot.
  4. Then, we water conscientiously.
  5. Finally, we place the plant in semi-shade until we see growth. When that happens, we can have it in full sun or leave it where it is.
