When to water the Cycas?

Cycas armstrongii

They are easily confused with palm trees, but they belong to two different genera. The Cycas are plants that coexisted with dinosaurs, while the appearance of garden princesses as many call them it was later. The care is also slightly different.

Do you want to know when to water the Cycas?

Depending especially on the weather, we will have to water more or less. As the frequency can vary a lot, what I am going to tell you next you have to adapt to the conditions in which your plant is found; In other words, if as a general rule it is usually recommended to water twice a week but in your area it tends to rain often, your Cyca may only need watering every 15 or 20 days. I explain this to you because it is a plant that does not tolerate excess water, so much so that it prefers to be in rather dry land and receive sporadic irrigation.

We have to bear in mind that it will also depend a lot on whether we have it in a pot or planted in the garden. In the first case, it will be necessary to pour water more often (about 2-3 times in summer and 1-2 the rest of the year), while in the second we will have to wait a little longer to repeat the task.

The substrate or the earth that we have has to be porous. If yours has a tendency to compact a lot, you can mix it with pearlite, or clay balls that you will find for sale in nurseries or garden stores.

Do not forget add a little compost throughout the growing season -from spring to late summer- to achieve an exceptionally beautiful plant. This can be chemical, or organic such as worm castings, manure or even guano.

You have doubts? If so, don't wait any longer and get in contact us.

Hello, my name is Liliana, I have a small palm tree in the living room, in a pot, I see that it is growing a lot and the container is small, when should it be changed from pot? Thank you in advance.

    Hi Liliana:
You can change your plant in spring; Also in autumn if you live in a warm climate -no frosts-.
    A greeting!

thank you for answering this question:

How do I get the children that have a scar?

      Hello Adriana.
You have to do it when they have an easily manipulable size, cutting them with a serrated knife previously disinfected with pharmacy alcohol. Then, you impregnate the base with homemade rooting agents and finally they are planted in pots.

For more information I recommend you read this article.

      A greeting.

Good night, sow a son of the cica plant and carry out the following process, excavate and remove the existing soil in the place since it contained a lot of caliche and debris until finding cleaner soil, I replaced that calichosa soil with fertilized soil, it has been planted for approximately two weeks the first days I was very pretty but the leaves are starting to turn yellow, can you advise me

      Hello Andres.

The procedure from what you count was well done, but does that son have roots? If you do not have them, I recommend you remove the leaves since anyway once they have turned yellow they will no longer serve you. Then if you can look to get rooting hormones, or if not homemade rooting agents (in the link you will see that there are many things that serve as such).

Water little, just moisten the soil. If it gets the sun, protect it with, for example, a shading mesh so that it does not dehydrate.

      And to wait. Lucky!
