La white eggplant It is a vegetable that we almost did not hear about. But thanks to projects such as Esporus, which are dedicated to researching and recovering seeds, today we can grow them in our garden. The question is, how?

Despite its color, we do not have to complicate too much, since has the same needs as any other variety of eggplant. But if you are not sure what they are, after reading this article you will be able to grow yours with security and confidence 🙂.

When and how is it sown?

The white eggplant, whose scientific name is Solanum melongena var. white, can be sown in winter (as of February in the northern hemisphere) in a protected hotbed, such as a seed tray (you can get it here) placed in a very bright room or in a greenhouse. It is filled with universal growing substrate (like this one from here), a seed is placed in each alveolus, burying it a little and watered.

When they begin to germinate, something that they will do throughout that month, they have to be exposed little by little to the outside. First in semi-shade so that they do not burn, and then gradually expose them to direct sun.

How is it planted and cared for in the garden?

The white aubergine is a plant that, in order for it to develop well, it should be planted in the garden. Therefore, once our seedlings are already adapted to the sun, we will have to plant them in the ground. We have to put them in rows, leaving a distance of about 30cm between rows and between plants.

Then, we install the drip irrigation system and start it up, because their water needs are very high. In fact, we must avoid that the land remains dry too long, otherwise we would end up losing the harvest before starting to cultivate them.

Moreover, we need to give them a regular supply of organic compost, how can it be chicken manure (you can buy it here). We put a 2-3cm layer on the ground and mix it a little with the earth.

When is it collected?

The aubergine harvest begins after 70-90 days counting from the planting in the field, so it is a medium-long cycle crop ... but very productive. 😉
