Why aren't my plants growing?

Magnolia

Do you have plants that they have stopped growing and you don't know the reason? Well, we are going to solve that question, because it is very important to know why growth has stopped in order to act accordingly and try to solve the problem. It must be taken into account that in winter, especially if it is cold with frosts, the plants usually do not grow or they do it very, very slowly, since during those months it is more important for them to stay alive than to grow; That is why the vital processes do continue, but growth stops, and they do not spend energy to flourish either.

Knowing this, if we are in the middle of the growing season (spring and summer, and in hot climates even fall) and we do not see signs that that is happening, let's see what can be done so that the plant continues to grow.

Lack of space?

Cassia

Plants that are in pots have a disadvantage compared to those that are in the ground: the space is limited. For this reason, it is common for the plant to see that it is healthy, that it does not have any plague nor is it undergoing excess watering, but that it does not grow anyway. Perhaps what you need is a pot change. An important note to add in this regard is the following: roots do not necessarily have to come out of the drainage holes to transplant it, but many times the roots grow horizontally, making it very easy to remove the plant from the pot - especially if the substrate is dry - without the root ball collapsing at all.

Generally fast growing ones need a pot change every 1-2 years, while those that have a slower growth can be in the same pot for up to 4 years.

Lack of water and / or compost?

Hibiscus

Compost is very important for plants, as they help them to have better growth and development. Just a good substrate is not enough for the plant to remain healthy and strong. In habitat, compost comes from decomposed animals and other plants. In cultivation they do not have that possibility, and that is why they must be paid, otherwise their defense system will weaken, causing, for example, fungi to make their appearance.

Equally necessary is water properly. There are plants that need more water than others, and depending on the climate we have, we will water more, or less. Flowering plants need to be watered often, while cacti and other desert plants once a week will suffice.

I have a guanaba plant and a mango plant, the 2 were planted at the same time, the mango plant continues to grow while the guanaba plant only has two leaves and it stopped and no longer grows, I would like to know why and what to do to make it grow Normally, I appreciate your advice, thank you.

      Hi Alicia.
Have you paid it? In spring and summer it is recommended to pay them with organic fertilizers sold in nurseries (guano, algae extract).
      A greeting.

Buenas tardes! I have a problem with a plant, it is a peperomia, it does not want to grow, I have tried everything, change the soil, water it only when the soil dries, add some nutrients, change it and nothing, the other day I took it out to see its roots and I realized that they have not had any change either, it seems to me super strange that it does not grow or die, it is like frozen in time, it has a large pot and some small leaves that came out but remained baby size and did not grow But, I don't know what to do, I really don't know what's wrong with him?

        1.    Monica Sanchez said

          Hi Salome.
I recommend you always leave it in the same place, since that way it will get used to it and it can grow, well, at its own pace 🙂
What kind of soil do you have on it? If you see that nothing grows, try planting it in a sandy type, such as perlite, pumice or something like that. In this way, your roots will be able to root better (and in the process they will prevent rotting).
          Greetings.

Hello, I have 2 magnolias, one given as a gift and another bought in a vivvero. They are in Badajoz. As soon as I put them on the ground they stopped growing. what could be happening to them? in summer I have them covered with awnings so that they do not get direct sun, in winter not. The fact is that they are very much alive but now they have stopped growing and have stagnated.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Ana.
Magnolia trees are rather slow growing trees. Anyway, now that spring has started you can fertilize them with a fertilizer for acid plants, since it is likely that they lack nutrients or do not find them in sufficient quantities to be able to grow.
      A greeting.

Hello, I have an American cedar, or so they told me, I have had it from a very young age, and it grew a lot in 4 months, in a pot, then I transplanted it, and the stem became quite strong, it became much thicker and it is no longer green yes not brown, it has grown to a maximum of 10 cm in 8 months, and branches have grown, many branches grow but they all fall off, and the stem grows a few centimeters. the branches all radiate from the stem, and grow large and green, then the branches fall off, and the cycle repeats itself. The stem is about 2 cm in diameter.

      Hello Lina.
If you have not paid it, I recommend doing it. Nutrients are likely to be lacking.
You can use guano (liquid) following the directions specified on the package. This way you will have more strength.
If it continues to get worse, get back in touch.
      A greeting.

I had a potted lemon that lasted two years, but then it dried up when I took it out of the pot. I noticed that the roots had never developed or it was very insignificant. What was it due to?
I was watering it and fertilizing it but this season it dried up ...

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Homer.
Perhaps the problem was with the land. For it to grow well, it has to be loose, well-drained soil. For this reason, it is highly recommended to mix the universal growing medium for plants with perlite or expanded clay balls, for example.
      A greeting.

Because herbaceous plants are more evolved than woody plants

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Maria.
Herbaceous plants produce more seeds than woody plants, which have a higher germination rate. This means that it is easy for all of 100 seeds to germinate and all reach adulthood as well.
      A greeting.

    Hello good evening.

A month ago I planted coriander, tomato, garlic, strawberry and melon by seed everything was going well until about two weeks ago when I realized that they were no longer growing and the tips of their true leaves began to turn yellow and have a green color. pale, what could this be?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Erika.
It may be that the mushrooms are doing their thing.
To keep things from getting worse, you can sprinkle copper or sulfur (like salt) once a month in spring and fall, or spray fungicide in summer.
It is also important to control irrigation, avoiding that the soil remains wet for a long time.
      A greeting.

HELLO GOOD AFTERNOON I WANTED TO ASK YOU ABOUT THE PRUNING OF THE PLANTS IN THIS MONTH OF OCTOBER DO YOU THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD OPTION THIS A LITTLE COLD WOULD NOT AFFECT MY PLANTS

    GREETINGS

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi John.
Yes, you can prune them now before winter sets in, as long as there is no frost in your area for a couple of months.
      A greeting.

Hi there! I recently planted an acorn, and the oak has germinated.
I was away from home for a while and whoever was there in winter left it next to the radiator, forgot about it and almost died. Now it has 4 leaves, it seems healthy, but nothing else grows, and I don't really know what to do!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Alberto.

Holm oak is a tree that should be grown outside, as it needs to feel the passing of the seasons. It resists well the frosts up to 18ºC.

My advice is to take it outside, in a place protected from the wind and direct sun. When spring returns, get used to the sun little by little, a little bit first thing in the morning.

If you have doubts, write us again.

      Greetings.

Hi there! About a year ago they gave me a not very large jade tree, at the beginning it grew a lot, it had very beautiful shoots and it grew quickly, I changed it from a pot to a larger one so that it would be more comfortable and it continued to grow very beautiful, but nothingness stagnated and did not grow again or give new shoots, the smallest ones fell and those that were half big stayed as they were, I thought it could be a matter of space and I changed the pot again but when doing it I realized that its root had not advanced at all, it was just as small as the first time I changed the pot. I water it every time I see that the surface soil is dry and the interior is a bit humid, I put it in the sun for a few hours a day and it does not have any type of plague, could it be that all this is due to the lack of nutrients? I have never paid it and I am afraid that is the reason, if so, when would it be good to start paying it? Right now in my country we are in winter, the temperature ranges from 9 ° sometimes to 20 ° other, and not every day there is sun, would it be better to wait until September with the beginning of spring and the warmth to pay it? I would appreciate an answer, thank you very much!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Augustine.

Yes, you are probably short of compost. You can fertilize it in spring and summer with a cactus compost, since although the jade tree is not a cactus, it does have similar nutritional needs. Of course, you have to follow the indications that will be specified on the container so as not to apply more fertilizer than necessary.

Here You have the plant file for more information.

      Greetings.

Hi there! I have a doubt, I put a mango seed to germinate, and it started well, I just saw that a root as such never came out, even a stem came out and it stretched more when the seed passed to the ground, it is a pot and black soil, but from Suddenly it stopped growing, no leaves have come out, and the root never came out, it is only the stem and it is still green as well as the seed, I am worried that it has died and I do not know it, what can I do?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Ilian.

When a mango seed germinates, the first roots can stay inside the seed until they grow.
If the stem is still green, then the plant is fine. But it is highly recommended that you sprinkle some copper powder on top of the ground, as this will prevent fungi.

      Greetings.
