Why do tomatoes split?

Sliced tomato

How many times has it happened to you that tomatoes have cracked or cracked? Sure many, right? This is something that happens very frequently when growing these plants. Although yes, you will never see a single one like that in a supermarket.

However, you have to know why do tomatoes split to prevent that from happening to yours. But I can tell you that it is not a symptom of any disease 🙂.

Why do they crack?

Tomatoes are plants that need a lot of water to grow. In fact, it is best to water them very often, daily even during the warmer months. But Sometimes it happens that we do not control the waterings well, letting the soil dry out, and of course, when we give them water, the roots quickly absorb the precious element. If at that moment you already have tomatoes, they react by increasing in volume, but their skin does not adapt with the same speed and in the end it ends up breaking, creating marks or cracks.

Thus, it is not a problem of pests or diseases, but only an aesthetic one. Even so, the tomato can be consumed equally. You just have to remove the skin and that's it.

How to avoid it?

To avoid cracking, we recommend doing the following:

  • Water steadily, keeping the soil moist and making sure that it is able to absorb water well.
  • Maintain soil moisture using padding techniques. For example, if we put a layer of volcanic clay, we will be able to reduce the evaporation of the water.
  • Pay whenever necessary, following the indications specified on the product packaging. It must be borne in mind that if we take a dose slightly higher than indicated, we will achieve a very tall but weak plant.
