Why plant mint in the garden

Mentha x piperite

Mint is a fantastic aromatic plant that is very easy to care for. But its growth is so fast that it is usually kept in very specific corners, and you can even choose to plant it in the ground with the same pot to have it somewhat controlled.

Despite this minor inconvenience, It is very interesting to wonder why plant mint in the garden, since there are many benefits that it can bring us.

What is peppermint?

Peppermint is an aromatic herbaceous plant that belongs to the botanical genus Mentha, like the mint. Its scientific name is Mentha x piperite, and it is a sterile hybrid obtained from the cross between Aquatic Mentha y mentha spicata. It reaches a height of between 30 and 70cm, with oval, opposite and petiolate green leaves that are between 4 and 9cm long and 2-4cm wide.

The flowers are grouped in terminal inflorescences that are spike-shaped, and are small up to 8mm.

What benefits does it have for the garden?

Having a mint in the garden is a reason for happiness, seriously 😉. This plant attracts beneficial insects, such as ladybugs -which eat aphids- or bees -which pollinate flowers-; what's more repel pests such as the carrot fly, ants and also the cabbage butterfly by emitting aromatic compounds that the aforementioned insects do not like at all.

How do you take care of yourself?

So that the mint is healthy and well cared for, you just have to put it in an area where it gets direct sun or semi-shade, and water often, about 3-4 times a week in summer and somewhat less the rest of the year. To control its growth, its stems must be trimmed regularly with scissors previously disinfected with pharmacy alcohol or with a few drops of dishwasher.
