Selection of the best wild flowers from the fields and meadows of Spain.

Rosemary

Rosemary, whose scientific name is Rosmarinus officinalisIt is an evergreen shrub that can be found in all regions with a Mediterranean climate. Not only in the so-called region, but also in some areas of the Canary archipelago. It has also become naturalized in tropical places like the Azores. Rather of medium growth, it is perfect for low maintenance gardens since it resists drought very well, in addition to salinity.

Although it does not usually exceed half a meter in height, we can make it a beautiful plant of up to one meter. In gardening it is used mainly for rockery or borders, but it is also suitable for bonsai technique because it has small leaves, an easily controllable growth rate and, as if that were not enough, it tolerates pruning quite well.

Another quality that rosemary has is its resistance to pests and diseases. However, it fears waterlogging, and that is why if you want to have it in a pot you will have to use a substrate that facilitates drainage. A good mix would be 60% black peat and 40% perlite. Irrigation must be regular, but not frequent. If you have doubts about when you have to water it, check the humidity of the soil (you can do it in a very easy way by inserting a wooden stick, or you can even take the opportunity to feel the soil by inserting a finger).

By the way, Did you know that it has medicinal properties? In infusion it is used to fight colds, but it is also useful when you need to improve blood circulation. Some even use it to curb alopecia, taking several stems, placing them in a boiling pot and, with the resulting water, "washing" the head. It's funny, right? But of course rosemary is not the only wild plant for your garden that we are going to suggest today ...

Poppy

The next candidate is a very elegant flower, with a very striking color. We are talking about the poppy, that little herbaceous plant with delicate petals ... I remember when I was young, well, younger, that it took its flowers and, almost instantly, the wind carried the petals away, leaving the flower only with the pistil (what emerges from the center ). It has always seemed like a very fragile flower to me, have you? And also red. You have to see how red attracts humans! Like many birds and insects. What to say about this beauty? The first thing: you will not find it for sale, but that is not a problem. These plants reproduce easily, so much so that you just have to take the ripe seed capsule, and bury it a little bit in the garden. You will see how in the next spring its seeds will germinate.

This plant, as you know, does not grow much more than half a meter in height and blooms after the winter season, as if it wanted to brighten the field with its showy flowers. Although it sounds strange, the exact origin of the Papaver rhoeas, which is how it is scientifically called. But experts place it on the European continent, reaching as far as Asia and even North Africa.

In many areas it has become so naturalized that it is not surprising that it is included in the list of "Plants of the region". In fact, there are those who consider it a plague. In other parts of the world it is increasingly difficult to find it, but you always see one that makes you regain the illusion of being able to see a field full of poppies.

If we talk about the uses, the tender leaves can be used to prepare salads, but without overdoing it, as you could have a stomach ache.

Hypericon

The hypericon, whose technical name for its genus is Hypericum, is perhaps more familiar to you by its other popular name: St. John's wort. There are many species of hypericón, so much so that we can find trees that grow to exceed ten meters in height, evergreen shrubs that rarely exceed two meters and herbaceous plants. Herbaceous types are more frequent in our lands, such as the Hypericum perforatum or Hypericum perfoliatum.

They usually appear without difficulty in cultivated land, where its beautiful yellow wild flowers awaken the pollinating interest of a wide variety of insects. That is why, if you want to increase the »microfauna» of your favorite green corner, the hypericon is an excellent option, since it will attract bees, wasps, ... in short, any insect wanting to quench their thirst. What's more, it is closely related to the beginning of summer, since it blooms precisely on those dates. So if you want to know when the beachiest season of the season will start, grab a hypericon and you won't have to look at the calendar anymore.

It is native to practically the whole world. Yes, yes, they have such a degree of adaptability that you can find them almost anywhere. Although we all have our preferences, and he is certainly no exception. It only grows in lands where rainfall is neither very scarce nor very abundant, and where temperatures do not reach extremes either. You could say that the hypericon likes the middle ground: not too cold, not too hot, right on point.

By the way, Did you know that the species H. perforatum has antidepressant properties? To take it you just have to take the leaves, boil them and drink the water. It's that easy and fast you can have an effective remedy to lift your spirits on low days!

Margherita

Who has not ever caught a margarita and have you played "loves me / doesn't love me" with its petals? This beautiful plant with wild flowers is, surely, one of those that most accompany our memories. And no wonder, for when it comes to welcoming spring, appear everywhere on both sides of the road, in the countryside and even in gardens, whether private or private.

His scientific name is chrysanthemum coronarium, but perhaps it can create confusion, since although the two-color daisies (white with a yellow center) are the most common, there are also yellow ones. The full name of the first ones is Chrysanthemum coronarium var. discolor, while that of the latter is Chrysanthemum coronarium var. coronarium. But, even if they have a different last name, grow under the same conditions and they need the same care.

Originally from the south of Spain, by entering other European countries it has managed to become wild in some of them, such as France or Germany. It spreads very easily, so much so that, if it is left, in a few years we would be able to enjoy margaritas in a considerable area.

They resist drought quite well, but if you are going to have them in a pot, it is advisable to avoid keeping the substrate dry for too long. It is better that they always have a certain degree of humidity so that they can grow and develop properly.

Bell

The morning glory, also known as bindweed, is a genus of herbaceous plants, most of them climbing, that you can find very easily in the field. Its flowers are trumpet-shaped, and can be of various colors: white, purple or bicolor (pink and white). They appear above all on the side of the roads, where they take advantage of and climb other plants. It is for this reason that many people consider it a weed, which must be avoided at all costs. But the truth is that its growth can be controlled easily by pruning.

Scientifically they are known as convolvulus arvensis (those with white and bicolor flowers) and Convolvulus althaeoides (those with purple flowers). When it comes to cover an area you don't like anymore, which has been left as half abandoned and is no longer used, put a bell and you will see how it changes. It is incredible the life that its small but precious wild flowers give. It is also an ideal candidate to be placed near a dry log in order to climb it.

Its growth is very fast, germinating in spring and blooming that same season summer. In just a few months you will be able to enjoy the beauty of its flowers!

It is native to the temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere. He loves the climate without great thermal variations. And if it was not enough, withstands drought without problems.

It is native to southern Europe, and specifically in our country you can find it anywhere. Almendro

The almond tree, whose scientific name is Almond, is a deciduous tree that grows to a height of approximately six meters. It is native to Asia, but it has become naturalized in all the warm-temperate places of the European continent, especially in the Mediterranean. It is a highly recommended plant if you want to enjoy a real flower show even before the sun begins to wake up the plants. Yes, you read that correctly: it can bloom in the final stretch of winter! In fact, this year its white petals are beginning to fall delicately on the ground.

Many of us believe that their flowers are only white, right? But… Did you know that there are also almond trees whose flowers are pink? They are not easy to see, as there are many specimens, and there is probably only one of twenty that has this color, but when you return to take a walk around the field, take a look.

The fruit, the almond, as you know, is edible. It ripens in summer, towards the middle more or less, depending on the climate of the place. However, there are those who prefer to eat the almonds while they are still green. Likewise, they taste delicious.

It is used mainly for its production of almonds, since unlike other species of Prunus, you do not need to spend many hours of cold to get an excellent harvest. But if you are looking for a species of a rather reduced size, that you can effortlessly enjoy with its flowers and fruits in your garden, the almond tree is a very good option. What's more, The oil that is extracted from the almond will help you soften any hardness you have and will even be effective against inflammations.

Dandelion

Towards the beginning of summer the field is dressed in white, but not in snow white, but in the following candidate: the Dandelion. Its scientific name is Taraxacum officinale, and although it is believed to originate in Europe, in reality its place of origin has not yet been determined.

This herbaceous plant is perennial, growing to a height of approximately 50 centimeters. Many consider it a weed, since it appears among the crops and among the plants that make up the design of the garden, but the truth is that it can be interesting to give it even a little corner because they have an insect strained for its pollen. You know which one is? The bee, which in addition to pollinate dandelions, will not hesitate to do the same with your plants.

Its precious "pompoms" contain about a hundred seeds, which will be carried by the wind away from their parents, thus creating one of the most beautiful shows of spring.

In addition, you can use its leaves to prepare delicious salads, thus helping your body to purify it. Yes Yes, it is perfect to cleanse the body of toxins; what's more, it will also help you with constipation. What more could you want?

Of course, we are talking about its fruits, which also attract a multitude of diners, including us.

This fast climber, native to Europe and Asia, is capable of reaching six meters in height, thus covering walls that were left empty and you don't know how to decorate them. But, yes, do not forget to support it so that it can climb and grow properly.

To control its growth you can trim it without problems, throughout the vegetative season. The blackberry is very resistant, being able to withstand prolonged droughts and even frosts. And neither are known enemies that can harm it. Without a doubt, it is perfect to have in your low maintenance garden.

Lavatera

We finish this selection of wild flowers with a genus of plants that, simply, falls in love. There are those whose flowers are dark pink, others a lighter pink, bicolored, ... well, there is so much variety that it is difficult to choose one! I'm talking about Lavatera, which are very similar to another genus of equally attractive plants: Malva. They look so much alike that, if you want to identify them correctly ,It is going to be very difficult for you. In fact, it is necessary to go to a laboratory to be able to carry out this task.

Lavatera are mainly native to the Mediterranean region, where grow on virtually any terrain: either in the garden or in a field. However, there are also endemic species from other continents, such as Asia or Australia.

They grow as creeping herbs or as shrubs. In our latitudes, those of the bushy type are more common, such as the lavatera arborea It can reach a height of approximately one meter or one and a half meters. Its leaves can be rounded or slightly webbed depending on the species, dark green in color. Its flowers open in summer and remain until before the temperatures begin to drop drastically.

And now comes the hardest part: which one did you like the most? And what less? Do not hesitate to tell us what do you think of these wild flowers. We hope so.

I found a wild specimen of Acmella decumbens and kidnapped a clone haha it is an asteraceae similar to the Marigold or marigold ... In fact, here in South America totally yellow daisies are more common than white ones with a yellow center. I also usually see ipomoeas. Greetings.

      Hi Ymara.
And how did you do with the cutting?
      a greeting

It was actually a stolon. I cut a piece already starting to root. It was curious, the plant was different from the other specimens of the place, it had a color variation (yellow almost white, unlike the intense yellow of the others) and I did not resist environmental crime haha. Maybe I can create a new garden variety, right? After two weeks it is starting to grow ... now I am thinking about when I can start to grow it or pay it ...

More than a variety, you can create a hybrid, which will surely be very interesting 🙂
Pay it you can do it now. Since it has already started to grow, it will do well. Of course, put half the indicated dose until a month passes.
As for the topping, you can also do it now. This will give you new stems soon.
      A greeting.

I have loved this article, I have several garden plots and I have been thinking about putting wild flowers instead of other plants. I live in Guipúzcoa and there are many beautiful ones. One of them is of course the dandelion, which I find beautiful. The problem is that in the soil that I have, everything comes out, tangled, and the effect is not pretty. How could I control it?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello maite.

We are glad that you liked the article. I tell you, to avoid that tangled effect, as very 'wild' the ideal is to first sow the seeds in pots (better in trays, because just as a maximum of 2 seeds are put in each alveolus you can get more specimens to reach adulthood ), and then, before planting them in the ground, an anti-weed mesh is put on. You make a little hole in the mesh, wherever you want to put a little plant, and that way it looks very cool 🙂

It takes more work than sowing in the ground and letting nature take its course, but it has the advantage that you prevent them from looking 'bad' when they grow up.

      Regards!
