Wisteria sinensis: the feather flower

Wisteria

La wisteria sinensis, better known as Wisteria or Flower of the Feather, is a climbing shrub of feasy culture and that reaches great dimensions. It can grow to a height of 15 meters. The lilac or white flowers appear in hanging inflorescences, giving a spectacular touch to the gardens.

In gardening it is one of those plants most used to cover pergolas or walls. Something that is not surprising then, Who can resist the beauty of its flowers?

wisteria sinensis alba

Native to China and Japan, it has foliage that behaves like deciduous, that is, it loses its leaves in winter. He does not dress in autumnal colors, but in return has a flowering period that lasts for several months and that begins in spring. It has a rapid growth, and its life expectancy is very similar to ours: it can live 100 years.

It is a climber that, unlike ivy (Hedera helix) needs supports to be able to climb without difficulty. Otherwise, all branches will either hang down, or grow to ground level. It can be attached with wires to the surface where we want it to climb, especially if the plant is young.

The care you need are the following:

  • Location: full sun, it will not be able to develop properly if it is in semi-shade.
  • Mild weather. In hot climates it can live, but there is a risk that it will have a bad time in summer due to high temperatures and dry wind.
  • Soil: prefers acidic soils, with a pH between 4 and 6. In calcareous soils it is common to have iron chlorosis, which can be corrected by adding iron sulfate to the soil, irrigating with acidic water and fertilizing with a specific fertilizer for plants acid following the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Pruning: it is important if we want to control its growth. This can be done towards the end of winter, before bud break.

It is very important to know that both the seeds and the pods are poisonous.

And finally…: Did you know that you can have it in a pot or even as a bonsai? Interesting, right? This means that, even if you don't have a large garden, you can still have this beautiful plant.

New plant, how long does it take for its first flowering?

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Mary.
It can take from 2 to 5 years, depending on how old you are and how you grow.
In order for it to bloom earlier, it is highly recommended to fertilize it in spring and summer with liquid organic fertilizers, such as guano since its effect is quick, following the instructions specified on the packaging.
      A greeting.

I have planted the wisteria wisteria. In blue color. It has been planted 15 days ago at half a meter. Of a median that I have with ylandys. Will it do me well.? And what does it look like if in autumn ... compost it with worm umus.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Julian.
Wisteria grows a lot and very fast, compared to Leylandis. You will have to prune it so that it does not shade them 🙂
Yes, you can fertilize it with earthworm humus, or with other slow-release fertilizers such as horse manure for example.
      A greeting.

    Hello
Monica I live in Bogotá Colombia they brought me seeds of Wisteria Sinensis from Spain which I planted
but they grow up to about 10 cemt and they do not grow any more, the yellow leaves begin to turn and fall off,
the plant as such does not die, the stem is still alive but does not sprout.
    Thank you.

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hi Gladys.
From what you count, they seem to lack iron. I recommend you fertilize them with a fertilizer for acid plants that they sell in nurseries, or with iron chelates, which they also sell in those centers.
      A greeting.

    What a good day

Buy a wisteria, the place where I put it is in semi-shade, will it be able to do well?
It gets sun about 5 hours a day.

Thank you very much and greetings! stay tuned

      Hello Antonio.

What climate do you live in? I ask you because, for example, in temperate-cold climates, that is, with mild temperatures in spring and summer and with frosts in winter, it can do well in both sun and semi-shade.
But in rather warm-temperate climates, with temperatures over 30ºC, it only does well if it is protected from the sun.

      Greetings.

      1.    Anthony Nunez said

I live in Mexico, in the central area of the country, in spring temperatures of 30ºC are normal. And because of the location, it only gets sun around 5 hours a day, do you think that is enough?

Another question, the plant is small, how often should I water it?

        thanks and regards

        1.    Monica Sanchez said

          Hello Antonio.
Yes, in fact Wisteria also grows well in semi-shade.

Water it 3-4 times a week in summer, and every 4-5 days the rest of the year.

          Greetings.

Hello how are you, a query
I have noticed that small yellow spots have started to appear on the tips of the older leaves. Which may be?? Any fungus or pest?
I don't know if I can send some photos for your reference.
Thank you very much and greetings!

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Antonio.
If it's just the old women, don't worry. It is normal for them to yellow and fall over time, even if it is not autumn 🙂

Anyway, if you have watered them more than usual lately, or if you want to prevent it, you can treat it with ecological fungicide.

      Greetings.

    Thanks a lot ?
I really like this plant and it is the first one I have, I want to take care of it the best I can

What ecological fungicide do you recommend?

Another detail, in the new leaves I have taken that from a branch they have started to come out like bites, what could it be?

Thank you very much really ?

    Greetings, was on the lookout

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Antonio.
As an ecological fungicide you have cinnamon, sulfur or copper 🙂

If you see bites on the leaves, they are caused by some larvae. In that case, I recommend treating it with potassium soap: diatomaceous earth.

      A greeting.

  10.   Antonio Nunez said

Thank you very much for the recommendations ??
Can I use both at the same time? Fungicide and potassium soap
    Thank you very much

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello Antonio.
No, it is not necessary. Potassium soap also has properties as a fungicide 🙂
      A greeting.

Hello how are you writing again
A query about this beautiful plant
Do you have an article on how to prune the Wisteria so that it has abundant flowering?
Or if you can recommend me a page or video to have it as a reference and do a good pruning

I hope you can support me
Thank you very much and greetings

    Antonio Nunez

    1.    Monica Sanchez said

      Hello again Antonio.
Wisteria is a plant that, more than pruning, what it needs is water and a regular supply of fertilizer to flourish. I mean, unlike rose bushes, pruning is not something that encourages flowering.

In any case, if you want to prune it, do it at the end of winter, removing dry, diseased, weak stems and those that are broken. You can also take advantage to cut those that are growing too much. But keep in mind that that year its flowering may be somewhat scarcer.

      Greetings.

      1.    Anthony Nunez said

Thank you very much Monica 🙂 which fertilizer is recommended? can you make any homemade?
and in what season or when to apply it

Thank you very much for your support Monica, I remain on the lookout.

        Regards!

        1.    Monica Sanchez said

          Hello Antonio.
Organic fertilizers are highly recommended. I personally like guano a lot, as it is very rich in nutrients, has a fast effectiveness and is not expensive.

But you have to know that wisteria is an acidophilic plant, and that therefore it needs soil and irrigation water with an acidic pH (between 4 and 6). If you don't have it, your leaves will become chlorotic from a lack of iron. For this reason it is also highly advisable to fertilize, from time to time, with fertilizers for this type of plants.

Of course: do not mix them. Use one month one and the next month the other.

          Regards!

          1.    Anthony Nunez said

Perfect, thank you very much Monica for all the support. I think I will first try to fertilize with iron since I see that the tips of the leaves are taking a yellowish tone, as if they were dry.

I reiterate my thanks Monica and do not be surprised that I write any other questions.

Thank you very much and greetings
