It is one of the most beautiful vine plants that you can find in Chile. Has a bell-shaped flowers of a pink or white color that will make your garden look spectacular.
Do you want to learn how to grow copihue home?
The copihue, whose scientific name is Lapageria rosea, is an evergreen climbing plant native to South America, specifically Chile, where it is considered National flower. It is one of the few vines that you can have at home without difficulty, because in habitat it grows in places protected from direct sun; something very positive if you want to low-light interiors.
To have a copy of Lapageria decorating the home you just have to take note of these tips. You will see that it is not as complicated as it seems! 😉
- Substratum: this plant grows in acid soils (with a pH between 4 and 6), that is why the soil that we are going to use has an equally low pH. We can purchase a substrate prepared for acidophilic plants -hortensias, azaleas, camellias-, or we can make our own with 40% blond peat, 30% vermiculite, and 20% worm humus (or any other organic fertilizer).
- Irrigation: to irrigate the copihue, rainwater must be used whenever possible, but if we do not have access to it, we will irrigate with osmosis or potable water. We can also let it rest overnight so that the heavy materials are in the lowest part of the container, and water the next day. It is important to always maintain a certain degree of humidity, so we will give it water about three times a week in summer, and 1 or 2 weekly the rest of the year.
You want to see germinate your own copihue? This plant reproduces easily by seeds, which they must be sown in spring, with the substrate mix mentioned above. Protecting the seedbed from the sun, but with access to light, in a very short time you will have new seedlings.
Very pretty, how can I get seeds to plant in Spring 2015, either of the two colors or seeds of the two are beautiful, I didn't know them, I wonder does their flowers have perfume? since its seeds are planted deep or placed on the surface, I am from Argentina. Yours sincerely STELLA MARIS
Hi Stella.
The copihue has no aroma. You may be able to get seeds at local nurseries or garden stores; If not, in online stores you will surely find.
A greeting.
My copihue is red, it has a beautiful flowering, but it does not give me seeds and therefore I can not do more plants, could you give me some advice and why does this happen?
Hello Denis.
The copihue is a plant that depends on its pollinators (especially hummingbirds) so that it can have an opportunity to produce fruits with seeds. That is why you must have more than one copy of copihue in the same area.
Regards!
Thank you, I love it, I am fortunate to have many copihues in my little field, I am just investigating about this beautiful vine.
Hello Maria.
Thank you very much for your comment. If you have any questions, here we are.
Greetings.
If the plant feels very wet on top, is it still watered? I have copihue in a very large pot and I water it once a week with a liter and a half of water in winter and twice in summer, will it be a lot of water? The bushes are fine but I don't know if it's the right thing to do, please help parzno kill them. Thank you
Hi Liliana.
No, if the soil is wet, you don't have to water it. It is preferable to wait a bit for it to dry.
Regarding the frequency of irrigation, from what you say, it is the correct one since the plants are doing well. 🙂
Greetings.
