Greenhouse buying guide

If you are going to buy a greenhouse but you are not sure which one to choose, or what you have to take into account to get it right the first time, don't worry. It is normal. So, based on our own experience, we are going to offer you the following tips:

How many plants are you going to protect?

And where are they? If there are going to be only two or three and they are in a pot, a small and portable greenhouse, like the one you have seen before from the AHOME brand for example, will serve you well. However, If they are on the ground or if there are many, then a tunnel style (for orchard) or shelving (if they are in pots) is better for you.

What material do you want it from?

The material is what makes the greenhouse price the most expensive. The steel tubes of the structure of the same, and the PVC plastic so common in home greenhouses make them affordable, but ... if we compare them with wood or glass, their durability is less, since the latter can be used perfectly for years and years.

Price?

Cheap is expensive ... many times, when talking about greenhouses. It is very important that, if you have the opportunity, you buy it in a store where buyers can leave their evaluationsWell, those will help you choose well and avoid displeasure.

Where to buy a greenhouse?

You can get them in different places:

Amazon

On amazon they have a wide variety of greenhouses: small, large, with different shapes and styles… It is very interesting to take a look at their extensive catalog, since you also have the option of reading the opinions of other buyers. Once you have decided on one, you just have to pay and wait for it to be sent home.

Bricomart

In Bricomart they mainly sell construction and reform products. Greenhouses do not usually have, but they do they are a good option to buy quality plastics for themselves.

Leroy Merlin

In the Leroy Merlin they have several models of good quality greenhouses, which you can buy either in a physical store or through their website. But the price is higher than on Amazon.

Ikea

In the Ikea you can buy almost everything for the home and garden, but greenhouses do not have too many. Now, if one day you go to a store, it doesn't hurt to take a look.

How do you maintain a greenhouse?

Greenhouse maintenance tasks are simple, but it is advisable to do them so that you can use them the more years the better. For this, you have to clean them with a cloth to remove dirt. If you see that the plastic is dirty, do not hesitate to wipe it with a damp cloth and then dry it with a dry cloth.

So you will have a greenhouse for a while 😉.

How to make a homemade greenhouse?

If you like DIYs, do not hesitate to make a homemade greenhouse

The first thing to identify is the budget, location and for what type of crop It will be used. Depending on the size and type of cultivation, the budget is important, since that will be the starting point to begin with the construction, the next aspect being its location and that is that light is necessary for all types of cultivation, it must be taken consider.

La ventilation and temperature are other important factors, so if your garden is home you can help with the electricity of the house to generate heat if necessary. A drainage system is another factor of consideration, that is why it should be avoided mainly to locate the greenhouse in irregular areas to facilitate the water channels when it is rainy seasons.

The next step is the Construction materials, since in the different farmers stores you can get an orientation of the equipment necessary to build the greenhouse that is planned. Part of the possible materials to require are the following, aluminum tunnels, irrigation system and lighting system.

The amount of materials will depend on the size of the structure. Among these elements are the materials that will provide solidity to the frames, walls and glass and, why not, beautify the greenhouse.

As to ventilation systemIt is recommended that it be placed on the sides of the structure which works very well for the fall and winter season and where some plants need heat to live. This can be provided to them through a heating system.

Materials

With all this in mind, If you want to make a simple and homemade one, with a rectangular shape, you will need:

  • 8 wooden slats of 30 x 30cm
  • 12 wooden slats of 40 x 40cm
  • Greenhouse plastic, 4 meters long
  • 8 hinges
  • 8 nails
  • Double sided tape for plastic

Step by step

The step by step to follow is the following:

  1. First, you have joined shorter slats, forming two squares, putting a hinge and then driving a nail in each corner.
  2. Then join the longer ribbons to the shorter ones.
  3. Then, once you have the structure done, cover all the sides except one with plastic.
  4. Next, cut a piece of double-sided tape, and put it on one side of the unprotected part.
  5. Finally, stick a piece of plastic, the size of that unprotected face, and voila.

Another option is, if you have a shelf for example, cover it with plastic.

What is a greenhouse and what is it for?

The greenhouse can be large or small

EL INVERNADERO It is a structure made with steel tubes, wood or another type of material designed to protect plants from cold, hail and snowfall. It is covered by plastic layers that prevent the passage of rain and reduce the climatic conditions inside it, allowing to maintain the adequate conditions for the development of the plants grown in the garden. Plastic greenhouse covers contain sun protection so that it resists being exposed on such hot summer days.

Types of plastic for greenhouse

There are three, which are:

Transparent

Allows the entry of light including short lengths. For this reason, the passage of light can heat the internal environment of the garden, affecting the growth of plants and fruits. It is not recommended for winter days, as it does not have the necessary thermal retention for these days. However, this type of plastic works for cases such as those that seek to avoid viruses and insects.

Verde

It looks green, but its color is given by the reflection of the green part of the light. For this reason, it does not allow green waves to penetrate the greenhouse. This plastic does not allow the entry of low energy lights but it does allow yellow and red waves, so This type of plastic is not recommended for greenhouses as plants need a balance in light.

30% shade

It allows a greater entry of light than plastic with 50% shade, reducing the amount of light energy, offering a cool environment in the greenhouse. It reduces them, but it does not suppress them, since so that the plants can carry out their natural processes light is necessary inside the garden. This can even be modified on winter and summer days by placing more or less shade on this structure, thus protecting its cultivation.

Based on these three types of plastic for a greenhouse, the one that best adjusts according to the climatic conditions that are changing from time to time is 30% shade plastic, this being the best option.

Types of greenhouses

There are several types of greenhouses, depending especially on the number of plants to be protected and where they are located. Thus, we have:

Tunnel Greenhouse

The tunnel greenhouse is ideal for orchards

It has a varied perimeter and its structure exceeds 3 cubic meters. The advantages of these greenhouses are that they are easy to install and highly resistant to strong winds and allow a large passage of light. However, they are small and have low thermal inertia.

Chapel Greenhouse

It measures approximately 6 to 12 meters long, 2.5 meters high and the slope of its roof is between 3 to 3.5 meters. Among its advantages is that its realization is not very complex and it can be built with inexpensive materials. Despite this, not ideal for ventilation when they are battery greenhouses.

Greenhouse planting teeth

It is very similar to the chapel greenhouse, they were used in areas with little rainfall and high solar levels. They have an east-west orientation and the roof is presented towards the sun.

Chapel type greenhouse (Chilean)

The difference with the chapel greenhouse is that this generates additional space for an overhead window. This type of greenhouse has good ventilation but also generates more shade.

Greenhouse with curved roof

The curved roof greenhouse are ideal for nurseries

Has high levels of solar transmission and good air volume, but limiting when they are battery greenhouses. It does not exceed 30 m in height.

Vineyard type greenhouse

Currently they are built with galvanized pipes for the interior support and posts for the lateral areas. Its height is 20 m or more, its slope is approximately 10º, its ventilation is only through the side openings. The advantages offered by this type of greenhouse are that due to its height, has a large volume of air that remains inside. The disadvantage is that due to the almost non-existent slope, it has very little solar capture.

Venlo type greenhouse

Have good thermal capacity and the material with which it is built is glass. They are built in modules and each one has 3 meters with a height of up to 7 meters and more. Each module is composed of a separation of 3 meters between them.

We hope that now it is easy for you to find the greenhouse you are looking for 🙂.
