When and how to plant peppers?

Chili seeds

Peppers are horticultural plants that grow faster and are more productive. In addition, its cultivation is really simple, so much so that from here I encourage you, if you have children, grandchildren or nephews, encourage them to help you plant them, since although they will not try them later, they will surely have a great time watching how the seedlings grow and develop.

So in order not to dwell on the introduction, let's see when and how peppers are planted to make the most of the season.

When are they sown?

The peppers, whose scientific name is Capsicum annum, are herbaceous plants that are sown in spring, just after the risk of frost has passed. In this way, its fruits can be ready for harvest in summer. But where are they sown? Well, here are opinions for all tastes. I like to sow in seedling trays first (like this one from here) and then plant the seedlings in the ground or put them in pots, but there are those who plant directly in the garden.

How are they sown?

In seedbed

If we want to sow the seeds in the seedbed, we have to follow this step by step:

  1. First, we have to fill it with substrate for seedlings (you can get it here) and water.
  2. Second, we place a maximum of two seeds in each socket and cover them with a thin layer of substrate.
  3. Third, we water again, this time with a sprayer, and we put a label with the sowing date to have everything more controlled.
  4. Fourth and last, we place the seedbed outside, in full sun and we ensure that the substrate does not lose moisture.

The first ones will germinate in 5-7 days, but we have to keep them there until they reach a height of about 7-10cm, which will be the moment to transfer them to an individual pot or to the garden.

In the garden

If we want to sow the seeds in the garden, we have to follow this step by step:

  1. First, we have to remove all the wild herbs and stones there are.
  2. Second, we dug small grooves of about 5cm or a little less leaving a distance of about 20cm between them, and we installed the drip irrigation system.
  3. Third, we water the furrows and place the seeds at a distance of 5-6cm between them.
  4. Fourth, we cover them with a little dirt.
  5. Fifth and last, we water again so that the surface of the earth is moistened.

Keeping the soil moist (but not flooded) they will germinate in 5-7 days.
