Tree ferns have the ability to blow us away. Although its growth rate is usually quite slow, having a high ornamental value from a very young age it is easy for us to acquire some specimens throughout our lives. For this reason, I am convinced that if you like this type of plants you will love the Cyathea tomentosissima.
This species is not well known, but precisely for this reason I'm going to present it to you,
Origin and characteristics of Cyathea tomentosissima
Our protagonist is a tree fern known in English as 'Dwarf Wooly Tree Fern', which means something like 'dwarf woolly tree fern'. Inhabits the mountain cloud forests and grasslands of New Guinea. It is made up of an upright trunk about 30cm thick and 4-5 meters high., and a crown of fronds (leaves) 2 meters long.
Despite what it may seem, it is a plant that can be grown without problems in pots throughout its life, since its root system is not invasive. Therefore, it is also an ideal species for small gardens.
How do you take care of yourself?
If you want to get a copy, I recommend providing the following care:
- Location: outside, in semi-shade.
- Irrigation: frequent in summer and somewhat spaced the rest of the year. In general, it should be watered every 2 days during the hottest season and every 4-5 days the rest.
- Soil or substrate: it must have good drainage and be fertile.
- Subscriber: from early spring to late summer with organic fertilizers, such as guano or worm castings.
- Planting or transplanting time: in spring.
- Rusticity: it resists frosts down to -8ºC. However, extreme heat (30ºC or higher) seriously harms you.
