What is La Faucaria like?

The Faucaria is a genus of succulent plants native to the Cape Province of South Africa. They are often known by the names Tiger's Mouth, Wolf's Mouth, Wolf's Maw, or simply Faucaria. Our protagonists they form dense clusters whose leaves grow in the form of thick rosettes; in the margins they have cartilaginous stingers curved inwards. The color varies from species to species, and can be dark green or greyish green.

The flowers are solitary or sometimes appear in pairs, are 3 to 5cm in diameter and are yellow in color. They arise in summer-autumn from the center of each rosette.

Faucaria is one of the easiest succulent plants to care for. In fact, to keep it for several years you just have to take into account the following:

  • Location: it can be both indoors and outdoors, but it must be in an area where there is plenty of natural light.
  • Irrigation: every 3-4 days in summer, and every 10-15 days the rest of the year. During the winter water once a month. If you have a plate underneath, you have to remove the excess water 15 minutes after watering.
  • Substratum: You can use pumice, river sand and even universal growing medium mixed with perlite in equal parts.
  • Transplant: every 2-3 years it is advisable to change the substrate.
