How to care for a cactus in the office

Potted mammillaria

Cacti are plants that, despite the fact that many species are well armed with thorns, are very beautiful. All of them produce short-lived but really spectacular flowers, more than enough reason to have them in the office.

However, it must be borne in mind that they are not plants that are very well adapted to living indoors, unless some measures are taken. I will explain to you below how to care for a cactus in the office.

Where to put the cactus?

A cactus in the office needs a series of special care in order to have normal growth and development. One of the most common problems encountered by this plant when it is grown indoors is the lack of light, which causes it to end up etiolating, that is, it begins to grow very fast looking for light, becoming weaker. To avoid this, It is very important that we place it near a window, and that we turn the pot daily so that, in this way, the same amount of light reaches all its parts.

When to water it?

Irrigation has to be very low. Indoors the soil takes longer to lose moisture, so it will be necessary to water very, very little. In summer we will water once a week, and the rest of the year once every 15 or 20 days. In the case of having a plate underneath, you must remove the water that has been left over ten minutes after having watered.

Do you have to fertilize the cactus?

Of course. From the beginning of spring to the end of summer we must fertilize it with a liquid cactus fertilizer that we can find in nurseries and garden stores ready to use. Read and follow the directions specified on the package to avoid the risk of overdose.

Do you need a transplant?

From time to time it will be necessary to change the pot. The ideal is transplant it as soon as you buy it and again after 2 years. That way, you can continue to grow well. As a substrate, you can use black peat mixed with perlite, or pumice.

My cactus plant got a white fungus type as if it were a cloth around its bark and its thorns fall off on their own, coupled with the fact that it turns brown and not green as I buy it. what can I do, I will appreciate your help. Greetings.

      Hi Armando.
I recommend you treat it with a spray fungicide, and reduce the frequency of watering.

    Hi good afternoon,
I wanted to know if my recently gifted cactus could be near my work monitor and between devices or on top of a super or laptop cpu.

I understood that with artificial light, office light, they also grow and feed.
Is it correct or do you advise me to put it in the sun every day?

Regarding irrigation, every 15 or 0 days as you describe and once a week in summer?

The previous one that I had brought from Almeria dried up in time, although shortly after one of them died, the other turned a very lime green. Later it was also dried.
    Reasons, poorly cared for perhaps?

I hope you tell me, thank you.

      Hello Jesus.
Cacti grow best outdoors, in a very bright area or in direct sun. But so that they do not burn, it is important to get used to them little by little and gradually, avoiding exposing them during the central hours of the day.

If you want a similar plant that grows well in the office, I would recommend one more gastronomy or a Haworthia, which do not need so much sun.

Irrigation, yes, it is rather scarce.

      A greeting.
