Step One - Make a Draft

Draft

Before you start looking at plants, it is important that you capture on paper or on the computer using a design program how you want your garden to be, taking into account its dimensions. In this way, then it will be to you much easier know how many decorative elements you are going to put.

Step Two - Prepare the Ground

Prepare ground

Palm trees are not very demanding plants, but it is true that they like to grow in lands that have good drainage and are rich in organic matter. For this reason, it is important that you do the following:

  • Remove the stones, as many as you can. You can help a walking tiller to extract them if the garden is large; or a hoe if it is small.
  • Break up the topsoil. This is especially recommended if it is a land that has been abandoned, since this allows the land to "breathe" again, being able to better absorb rainwater.
  • Add a layer of organic compost of about 5cm. Can be manure, earthworm humus, guano, or the one that is easiest for you to get.
  • Install the irrigation system. For palm trees, it is advisable to use drip irrigation, since the soil will be able to absorb the water much better.

Third step - Choose your palm trees

Now comes the most difficult and complicated part of all: choose the palm trees you want to put in your garden. And it is difficult because if there are about 3 thousand species, depending on the climate in your area you can put about 100 or more. But of course, you cannot put 100 species of palm trees in your green space, unless it is really big and you want to have a beautiful palm grove, so… what to do?

There is no choice but to choose the best of the best, which is still complicated. It's true. They may all seem the same, but when you start to investigate them, gender by gender, you realize how different they are from each other. To make your task easier, I am going to tell you some of the most interesting for both cold and warm climates:

Step Four - Decorate Your Garden

Once you have chosen your palm trees, the best moment of all arrives: that of the plantation. But when and how are palm trees planted? Well, the best time to plant them is in spring, when the temperatures start to rise. To do this, a 1m x 1m planting hole must be made, since this way the garden soil can be mixed with 30% perlite, which will help its roots be better aerated and can absorb water and nutrients more quickly.

The plant must be a little below ground level, so that a tree can be made so that the water stays close to the palm tree. Afterwards, you can put around the plants that you like the most.
