La monstera It is a tropical plant that grows when temperatures are somewhat high; that is, when they are kept above 20 and 30ºC. The cold slows down its growth a lot, to the point that if the mercury in the thermometer drops too low it becomes paralyzed. This is important to know, because if we want to get a new plant from a cutting, we'll have to get it in the springonce it starts to settle.

It will depend a lot on where you live and the climate in your area, but when you see that the lowest temperature starts to be 15ºC or more, then you can get cuttings.

How to get the monstera cutting?

The first thing to be clear about is that if we cut only one leaf, it will not produce roots. It can look very pretty in a vase, but with it we will not have a new plant. So that everything goes well, it is very important to cut a piece of stem that has a knot or bud. If it has a root, much better, but if not, nothing happens.

Once we have the cutting, we can do two things: put it in a glass of water, or plant it in a pot.

Cutting care

We are interested in it taking root and that everything goes well, so we are going to see how it is taken care of from now on:

Option 1: put the cutting in water

It is certainly the simplest method. it only consists of introducing the cutting in a glass of water and that's it. In addition, it allows us to see how it is evolving quickly, but it is not always the best option.

And it is that the monstera is a plant that does not like excess water at all, so if we are not careful, our cutting will rot. Therefore, it is best to clean the glass or vase every day, and of course renew the water each time. This will reduce the risk of bacteria harming it. But also, as soon as we see that the roots sprout, we will plant it in a pot with substrate for green plants such as this.

Option 2: plant the cutting in a pot

It is the option that I personally recommend the most, because although we will not be able to see when it takes root, the risk of losing it due to excess water is much lower, since we are the ones who have to water it. But, How do you plant the mosquito cutting in a pot?

You just have to follow these steps:

  1. We will fill a small pot, about 8 centimeters in diameter, with coconut fiber (for sale here) or vermiculite (for sale here). These are spongy and very light substrates, ideal for rootless cuttings as they retain moisture but not excessively.
  2. Next, we water.
  3. Now, we take the cutting and impregnate the base with powdered rooting hormones (for sale here).
  4. Then, we take a stick for example and introduce it into the pot, sticking it in the center. Then we extract it and plant the cutting there. I do not recommend "pinning" the cutting as it could be damaged.

As long as everything goes well, cuttings take about two weeks at most to root. But for this it is very important that they are kept in a place with great clarity but without direct light, and that the temperatures are also high, around 20-30ºC.

And it is that if they are lower or higher, the cold or heat will prevent them from producing new roots. However, as long as they look green and healthy, don't lose hope that they will take root.

What light does the monstera need to root?

The monstera it has to be in an area where there is a lot of natural light but not direct; Now, we could also get it to take root if we buy a growth lamp for plants and put the cutting near it. With this we will be able to have cuttings with roots even if there is not enough light inside the house.

Another thing we could do is have the cutting outside, in the shade so that the sun does not burn it.

As you can see, it is relatively easy to get monstera cuttings. We hope that these tips can be useful to you and thus achieve new healthy and beautiful plants. Once you achieve it, do not hesitate to take care of them as we explain in this other article:
