How to plant cacti

Cacti are a very special type of plant: instead of having leaves, they have thorns that protect them from possible herbivorous animals that try to eat them. There are many species of very different shapes and sizes, but what they all have in common are their beautiful flowers, which are some of the most beautiful in the plant kingdom.

But Have you ever wondered how to plant cacti? If so, now is the time to find out. 🙂

Notocactus scopa

When you want to plant cacti, the first thing to do is wait to be in spring or summerSince in autumn and winter the seeds will not germinate unless you live in a mild and warm climate. In this sense, the ideal temperature is between 20 and 30ºC, so if we want to obtain small cacti during the cold months we will have to choose to use an electric seed germinator that we will find for sale in nurseries and garden stores. .

Once the seeds have been acquired, proceed as follows:

  1. The first thing to do is prepare the seedbed or germinator filling it with sandy substrate. One of the most recommended and easy to get is vermiculite, but previously washed river sand can also be used.
  2. Then it spread the seeds trying (they are very small 🙂) that they are a little separated from each other. In the event that many remain together, it is not going to be a serious problem, since they grow slowly and do not have invasive roots.
  3. Then it moisten the substrate with a water spray without chlorine.
  4. Optional (although recommended): to avoid the proliferation of fungi, can be treated with systemic fungicides liquids once every 15 days.

If all goes well and the substrate is kept moist, the seeds should begin to germinate after a week or 10 days.

Astrophytum seedlings.

Good luck and good sowing.

Hello, I have a Cactiform Euphorbia (I think), inside. It's so big that I don't know what to do with it. I do not know whether to prune it a lot or take a couple of branches and replant them to see if it catches on. I'm worried that the pot will tip over.

      Hi carmen.
You can prune it if you want, but wear gloves as latex is toxic.
The stems can be planted in pots with universal growing substrate mixed with perlite in equal parts.
      A greeting.
