It's much easier than it sounds, but if you don't know how to prune a rose bush, this time we are going to learn everything we need on the subject.

Pruning time

Rose bushes are shrubs that can be pruned throughout the year. Although it is true that they will give us 'more work' while they are blooming, that is, from spring to autumn, it is convenient to prune them also in winter unless we live in a very cold area where there are frosts. Now, if you want to make cuttings, the ideal time is in February / March in the Northern Hemisphere and in October / November in the Southern Hemisphere.

What does it take to prune?

Before proceeding to prune our plants, it is highly recommended to prepare everything that we will need. In this case, it will be:

  • Gloves: to protect our hands from thorns.
  • Pruning shears: essential to work.
  • (OPTIONAL) Healing paste: Although it is not essential, if you want you can apply healing paste on each cut.

Now that we have everything, we will proceed to prune. For it, you have to follow this step by step:

  1. We will remove the suckers, weak branches and those that have not flowered.
  2. As the flowers wither, it is essential to prune them to encourage the budding of new roses.
  3. The vigorous branches, that is to say, those that are filled with flowers, will be pruned above the fifth bud; on the other hand, the youngest ones will be left with two buds.
  4. Finally, it is highly recommended to remove the branches that intersect so that the entire plant can have all the sunlight it needs.

Thus we will achieve perfect rose bushes 🙂.
