How to replant lavender

How do you replant lavender?

Has it happened to you that you planted a lavender in the ground, and now you are seeing that you did not put it in the most suitable place? Well, don't worry: it is not a problem that has a difficult solution, although it does require some patience and, also, to be very careful because if a mistake is made and it is serious (for example, many roots) then it will cost to recover.

So if you need to know how to replant lavender, we are going to explain below everything you need to know so that it goes well and you can continue enjoying your plant.

What tools are needed to replant lavender?

You need the hoe to replant the lavender

To make the work easier and more comfortable, what we will do is prepare those tools that we will need. For what we are going to do, they will be these:

  • Una hoe. This is the tool that will be most useful to us, because with it we will extract the plant from where it is, and we will plant it in another place. you can buy it here.
  • watering can full of water. It is essential so that, when it is already replanted, we water. If we didn't, the roots would have more trouble resuming growth. get it here.
  • Gardening gloves, to make work even more comfortable. do not stay without them.
  • OPTIONAL: Anti-weed mesh. If our intention is to have many lavenders together, it is interesting to place an anti-weed mesh on the ground after making the planting holes. This will minimize the risk of herbaceous plant seeds germinating. buy it here.

How do you replant step by step?

If we already have all the tools, it will be time to get down to work. Therefore, we will put on our gloves and take the hoe to make the hole where we are going to plant the lavender. It is important to do it now and not later, because the plant has to spend as little time as possible with its roots exposed. Said hole will have to measure approximately 25-30 centimeters wide by about 30-35 centimeters deep; although it can be somewhat smaller if it has only been in the ground for a few months (or less time), since it will not have been able to take root much.

Once finished, we will go to where we have the lavender, and with the hoe we will proceed to make four trenches about 30 centimeters deeparound the plant. We have to dig at a distance of about five centimeters from it, since that way we will not damage it. When they are finished, with the same hoe -or even better, with a spade, which is like a shovel but narrower and straighter- take it out of there. To make it easier for us, we can pour water into the ditches; in this way, the earth will soften and it will not cost as much to extract it.

Then we will introduce it in the hole that we made before. It is necessary to see if the surface of the substrate is a little - about two centimeters maximum - below the level of the garden soil, since this way when watering the lavender it will be able to make good use of the water. And it is that if it were higher, for example, said water would move away from the roots; and if it were lower, there would be a risk of rotting the plant, since the water would remain stagnant for a while at the base of the plant, which is the part that would also receive very little light.

To finish, we will put the anti-weed mesh if we want, and we will water.

How to know that the replanting has been a success?

Lavender recovers well from transplanting

La lavender essence is a plant that, If you have a problem, it will be noticed right away.. For example, if you are very thirsty, the stems seem to dangle or fall; If, on the contrary, it has too much water or the roots are growing in very compact and humid soil, the leaves begin to die.

However If everything goes well, how will we know? Well, very easy: we will see that it is growing, or at least that it remains green, with erect and healthy stems. It may happen that the same day of replanting or the next day it looks sad, but if it recovers in a matter of a short time, we should not worry.

When should you replant a lavender?

We have talked about how to replant, but not when to do it. At this point, let me tell you something important: the ideal is not to have to replant it, because it is still a bit risky no matter how well it is done. But Sometimes we will have no choice, for example, if we have a plant that gets a lot of shade, or it is in a soil that does not drain water well.

Under these circumstances, we will have to seriously think about moving it as soon as spring arrives; that is, we do not have to take it out of there in summer, much less in winter, since we could lose it.

I trust that these tips will help you to replant your lavender successfully.
