What is lawn scarification?
Although the word "scarification" could create confusion, as it has another meaning in gardening which is the fact of shortening the dormancy period of the seeds by means of different pregerminative treatments, when we refer to the lawn we speak of »Scratch» the ground to remove the felt. And what is felt? Well, a 1-2cm layer of leaves, roots and soil that forms on the surface of the soil that has been accumulating.
Why should the lawn be scarified?
The felt is very waterproof, so it prevents water, air and compost from reaching the roots well. What's more, favors the appearance of fungi that could damage your lawn forcing you to buy fungicides, and even remove the weeds from the affected area and reseed it, which will not be necessary if it scarifies.
How is the lawn scarified?
There are two ways to do it:
- With a rake: energetically scratches the surface of the ground.
- With a scarifier: when you have a medium or large garden, it is the most recommended. It is a machine that has a roller with several blades that break the surface of the ground.
And, by the way, you should know that the time to scarify is in spring and autumn. Get a healthy green carpet by scarifying it every year and, if you want it to look uniform and the garden is not very big, you can use a manual lawn mower to help you cut it.
