Origin and characteristics
Our protagonist is an endemic cactus from Cuzco and Junín in Peru, whose scientific name is Peruvian oroya. It is a globose cactus that grows solitary. It measures about 30cm in height by about 20cm in diameter. It is well armed with curved spines protruding from the areolas.
It blooms in summer. The flowers sprout from the apex of the plant, and are pink and red with a yellow center. The fruit is a red roe berry.
