His scientific name is Peruvian scilla, and belongs to the Liliaceae family. It is originally from the Old World, specifically Europe. It is a bulbous perennial plant, which means that once the bulb is planted and sprouts, it will only lose the aerial part (its leaves) if the winter is very cold; otherwise, you can enjoy it all year round, either in a pot or by planting it directly in the garden.

It has lanceolate leaves up to 60cm in length, and its floral stem is about 40cm high with a cluster of up to 100 flowers blue or white. It is, therefore, one of the bulbous plants that can open the most flowers ... in each season!

This beautiful plant is usually sold as a bulb, but you can also find it in cactus and succulent nurseries, since they are cared for in a very similar way. You do not know how? Do not worry. Here are some tips in order to care for Scilla properly:

  • Location- This is a plant that loves to be in direct sunlight.
  • Substratum: it must be porous, such as 70% black peat and 30% perlite.
  • Irrigation: occasional, letting the substrate dry between waterings. We must avoid waterlogging, otherwise the bulb could rot.
  • Fertilizer: Although it is not very demanding, if we fertilize it throughout the growing season (from spring to late summer) we will obtain a Peruvian scilla much healthier and with better growth.
  • Rusticity: withstands frosts down to -3ºC without problems. If it is colder in your area, take advantage and keep it in a very bright room until the good weather returns regres.
