How to plant palm trees in the garden

Dypsis in garden

All the palms They are very elegant plants, with an exotic appearance that beautify the gardens in a spectacular way. There are more than 3.000 different varieties, originating from warm and temperate regions around the globe. There are some very tall ones, such as those of the Ceroxylon genus, which can exceed 30m, and there are others that remain small, such as the miniature Dypsis that does not measure more than two hands (about 40cm).

Its ornamental value is very, very high, therefore, I am going to explain to you how to plant palm trees in the garden.

Garden with palm trees

The first thing you have to know is that palm tree roots are shallow, and do not go deeper than 40-50cm as much. But, beware, this does not mean that they can be planted in very small spaces, but rather that we will not have to worry about the pipes or other things that we have underground. For this reason, they are often planted near swimming pools, in groups of two or three, which will make us imagine very easily that we are on any tropical island during the summer.

But going back to the topic at hand, and knowing that its roots are not aggressive, how are they planted? , namely, What steps do we have to follow to put a palm tree on the garden floor?

Here is a simple step by step:

  1. In spring, drill a 1m x 1m hole.
  2. Mix the soil with growing medium and perlite, more or less in equal parts.
  3. Fill the hole with the mixed soil, until you see that the palm tree can look good. (You can put it in it with the pot to check it).
  4. Then, remove the plant from its container, and place it in the center of the hole.
  5. Now finish filling it with the mixed earth.
  6. Make a tree grate, that is, a barrier of about 5 cm high, with the earth that has been left over so that the water does not go away.
  7. Finally, waters.

If it is very windy, I advise you to place a tutor so that it does not have problems.

With these tips, your palm tree is sure to get off to a good start 🙂.

Good afternoon Monica, I need your advice. I have a 10 year old Bismark palm tree and just a few months ago it got clusters of green seeds. I want to try to reproduce them. I already read that I have to remove the shell, soak them, the ones that float I throw them and the others I sow. My questions are: what color must the seeds be to get them off the palm tree. I can use black soil to plant them or I need to make a bed of sand for them. Thank you, I hope you can help me.

      Hi Patricia.
The seeds will turn brown or black once they are ripe 🙂.
Rather than planting them in pots, I would recommend putting vermiculite or sand in a zip-lock plastic bag, moistening it, and sowing the seeds in it. Then, all you have to do is put the bag near a heat source, 25ºC, and wait.
      A greeting.
