How to care for the cherry tomato in a pot?

Cherry tomatoes can be grown in pots

Cherry tomatoes are one of the varieties of tomato plants that are best adapted to living in pots. As they are plants that do not grow much, and also produce smaller fruits, they do not need as much land to grow. For this reason, if you want to grow your own and want to do it in your patio, terrace or balcony, for example, you can do it very easily by following our advice.

Some tips that, as you will see, are very simple to put into practice. With them, it is very likely that you will get a very good harvest. If you don't believe us, then we'll tell you how to care for cherry tomatoes in a pot

Choose a suitable pot for your cherry tomato

The pot is where it will grow, where it will be for several months, so it is important that it is the right size for her and that it also has holes in its base. But in addition, it must be taken into account that, although the plant is small, it may need at least one transplant until it is finally in its last pot.

This must be so because if we put a little plant that is barely ten centimeters tall and has a root ball of about 2 or 3 centimeters, in a container with a diameter of 40 centimeters (for example), the risk that it will end up rotting is very high, because it will have an excess of moist soil. To EVITED these problems, You must be patient, and plant it in a container about ten centimeters wider and higher each time the roots come out of the holes.

Put a substrate rich in organic matter

To get a better harvest, it is highly recommended to plant it in a pot with a specific substrate for urban gardens (for sale here), or you can make the following mixture: 60% mulch + 30% perlite + 10% earthworm humus. The so-called universal substrate of certain well-known brands, such as Flower or Fertiberia (for sale here).

Now, I do advise you not to buy too cheap or too heavy substrates, since these usually have remains of uncrushed organic matter (such as branches or leaves), and sometimes you may find some unpleasant surprises, such as insect eggs or fungal spores.

Water your cherry tomato several times a week.

The cherry tomato needs water frequently, especially when it is kept in a pot, and even more so during the summer. As it must be placed in a sunny spot for it to grow properly, the soil dries out quickly. Therefore, We must be aware that it does not dry out completely, because if it happens, we will see that the stems seem to "hang" and that the plant looks sad.

During a heat wave it may be necessary to water every day. This will depend a lot on the temperatures that exist and on the land that we have put on it. If you have doubts, check the humidity by inserting a wooden stick, as I explain in this video:

Pay it throughout the season

cherry tomatoes they must be fertilized when they are about 10 centimeters tall, until the tomatoes ripen. And since these are edible, we will use fertilizers of organic origin to achieve better results. This means that they will come in very handy for example guano (for sale here), seaweed fertilizer, manure, or earthworm humus (for sale here).

But yes, if we buy powdered or granulated fertilizers, we will have to add a little, no more than a handful per plant. Then we mix it a little with the earth, and water it. In the event that we use liquid fertilizers, we will follow the instructions for use.

Put your potted cherry tomato in the sun

This is very important. The tomato plant needs lots and lots of sun to grow straight and strong. That is why it grows so well on balconies, patios or terraces that are exposed to the light of the king star throughout the day. Thus, it is desirable that even the seedbed be exposed to sunlight, even if the seeds have not yet germinated. In this way, you will see that they grow much better.

It is not a plant that can be in the shade or indoors.

Carry out preventive treatments so that you do not have pests

Surely you have heard that prevention is better than cure. Well, this can also be applied to plants. In addition, tomato plants can have many pests: mealybugs, caterpillars, thrips, whitefly... Wouldn't you like to do something to prevent them from having them? It's you can do it by treating them once every fortnight with diatomaceous earth for example.

This is an ecological insecticide that looks like flour. What you have to do is wet the plant with water, and then pour diatomaceous earth on top, on both sides of the leaves, stem, and also on the ground. Of course, do it late in the afternoon, when the sun no longer shines. This way it will not burn (something that would happen if it hit it, since the rays of the king star, when hitting the wet leaves, would create the magnifying glass effect, and therefore would damage them).

So yes, you can have potted cherry tomatoes. Have a good harvest.
