What is the Rattail cactus like?

Our protagonist is a cactus native to Mexico known as Hanging Cactus, Rat Tail Cactus, Horn Flower, Whip Flower or Yerba de la alferecia. It is characterized by having cylindrical stems up to 2cm in diameter and up to 2 meters long. These are made up of between 10 and 14 ribs, which are covered by small white or grayish areolas. The spines are 0,5cm long and golden.

The flowers, undoubtedly their greatest attraction, bloom in spring and are pink or purple-red. The most interesting thing is that they measure up to 8cm in length and can last from 3 to 6 days.

  • Location: it must be in a very bright area but without direct sun.
  • Irrigation: 2 times a week in summer and every 10 days the rest of the year.
  • Substratum: it is recommended to mix black peat with perlite in equal parts.
  • Subscriber: during the warm months, fertilize with a cactus fertilizer following the instructions specified on the package.
  • Transplant: every two years, in spring.
  • Multiplication: by seeds or cuttings in spring.
  • Rusticity: supports mild frosts down to -2ºC, but needs protection against hail.
